Addiction Medicine Fellowship

Program Description

The Stanford University Addiction Medicine Fellowship is a one-year, advanced fellowship opportunity in addiction medicine, open to physicians who have completed any ACGME-accredited residency. The Fellowship is accredited by the ACGME.  Physicians who complete the fellowship are eligible to apply for board certification in Addiction Medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine or the American Osteopathic Association.

We provide state-of-the-art training in the treatment of patients with addiction, including detoxification, pharmacotherapy for addiction, abstinence-based recovery models, harm-reduction recovery models, motivational interviewing, 12-Step facilitation, consultation for medical and psychiatric hospital services, and psychosocial approaches to the treatment of patients with addiction and pain. The program is tailored to the individual background and interests of the applicant, and includes but is not limited to experiences in the following settings: Stanford Inpatient Addiction Medicine Consult Service, Stanford Outpatient Dual Diagnosis/Addiction Clinic, Stanford Adolescent Recovery Clinic, Stanford Family Medicine Clinic, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Valley Homeless Health Program, Veterans Administration Addiction Treatment Services, Kaiser Santa Clara Addiction Medicine Recovery Services, and scholarly/research collaborations. Our goal is to train physicians in all aspects of treating patients with substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring psychiatric and medical disorders. We also hope to promote future leaders in the field of Addiction Medicine.

Positions Awarded Through the NRMP Match

For the 2025-26 academic year, the Addiction Medicine Fellowship has six available fellowship positions. All six positions will be awarded through the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) through the Specialties Matching Service® (SMS®).

Applicants should register for both ERAS and the NRMP Specialties Matching Service.

The Match calendar used for Addiction Medicine is “Medicine and Pediatrics Subspecialties”. While our program is in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, note that the “Psychiatry” Match calendar is only for the residency program and other participating psychiatry fellowship programs. Our program is Addiction MEDICINE, different from Addiction PSYCHIATRY.

Program Eligibility Criteria and Application Requirements

  1. Before entry into the program, applicants must complete or have completed an ACGME accredited residency program.
  2. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or possess the appropriate documentation to allow them to legally train at the Stanford University School of Medicine according to School of Medicine Department of Graduate Medical Education policy.
  3. Please note that Stanford Health Care does not sponsor H-1B Visas; only J-1 Visas can be sponsored for this fellowship.
  4. The applicants must have or be eligible to obtain an unrestricted license to practice clinical medicine in the state of California.
     

Applications to the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program Must Include

  1. Curriculum vitae (entered into ERAS)
  2. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE, aka “Dean’s Letter”)
  3. Medical school transcripts
  4. Three (3) professional letters of recommendation, one must be from your residency program training director
  5. USMLE transcript
  6. Personal statement of approximately 500 words outlining the development and current direction of your interest in addiction medicine and your reasons for applying to the Stanford program

Important Dates

July 3: Fellowship applicants may begin applying via ERAS.

July 17: Our program begins receiving and reviewing applications submitted to ERAS.

Interview Dates: Applicants eligible for interviews will be invited to interview during our interview days, which will be Thursday, 8/1; Thursday, 8/15; Thursday, 8/29; Thursday, 9/12; Thursday, 9/26; and Thursday, 10/10

Sept 25: NRMP Match Ranking Opens

Nov 6: Rank Order List Certification Deadline

Nov 20: Match Day!

Benefits

Effective July 2024 – Annually

  • Effective the first pay period following July 1, 2024, in lieu of a separate housing allowance, $10,000 shall be added to each Resident/Fellow’s base salary (subject to taxes and withholdings).
  • $1,000 - Cell Phone Allowance, added to the 1st paycheck in July (subject to taxes and withholdings).
  • $2,000 - Meal Allowance, added to the 2nd paycheck in July (subject to taxes and withholdings). MD’s only.
  • $2,000 - Educational Allowance, added to a paycheck in November (subject to taxes and withholdings). 
    To be eligible all assigned Healthstream modules must be completed by the Resident or Fellow within the first week of the academic year/and or hire date.
  • $3,500 - Moving Allowance for New Hires only. No receipts required. Paid on the 2nd paycheck in July (subject to taxes and withholdings).

The Medhub software is unable to reflect future salary increases. Salary increases will occur during the academic year according to the following schedule, as provided in the CBA:

Effective, the first pay period in September 2024 salaries shall be increased by five percent (5%).
