Women in Medicine: Seda Tierney, MD

Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

My father is an Internist. I spent my childhood in his office, watching him take care of patients. He had a giant medicine book in the back of his office where he would constantly look up his patients and point out interesting findings to me. He was my superhero, healing patients through knowledge. I already knew then that I would pursue the same path.

What is a challenge you experience in pursuing a career in medicine?

I am glad now that there is more focus on physician well-being, especially for the ones with young families. To pursue the career I dreamt of, I had to work really hard. There were several times during my journey when it felt like I was at the 18th mile of the marathon and was not sure I could go on anymore. It certainly did pay off to push more in my case. However, we need to make it easier for the next generation.

What is the most fulfilling part of your work?

Caring for children

What strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being?

I exercise regularly, always try to take mini-vacations and prioritize spending time with my family.

What advice would you give someone starting in the field?

Don’t be afraid to pursue your own dreams, do not settle for less, and do not look back- always forward...
