Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

My grandfather was an old style GP with his practice out of the first floor of his house. His relationships with is patients, his care of them and his pride in their life successes spurred my desire to enter medicine.

What is a challenge you experience in pursuing a career in medicine?

I've altered my path in medicine several times, from basic science research to clinical specialization to medical education and administration while also raising a family. Taking the "road less traveled" has presented both obstacles and opportunities.

What is the most fulfilling part of your work? 

My work with trainees over the years has been the most fulfilling part of my work. I enjoy seeing those of I have trained grow and become leaders.

What strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being? 

I focus on my family and friends, traveling and entertaining whenever I can and enjoying great conversations and experiences.

What advice would you give someone starting in the field? 

Never feel that your path is dictated by others. Take the time to determine what will give you fulfillment and happiness and don't be afraid follow a different road.
