Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

I honestly didn't consider many other fields when I was growing up. My father is an adult cardiologist - I would intermittently go to work with him and see how much he enjoyed his work and helped his patients. Having him as a role model convinced me medicine could be a field I would enjoy.

What is a challenge you experience in pursuing a career in medicine?

I've always struggled with imposter syndrome - It has lessened over the years of studying and training but I still have to remind myself time to time that I do belong amongst my peers and I deserve my success because I've worked so hard to achieve it. I also struggle with accepting that having a career in medicine means that I can't do all the things I want to do for my daughter because there are only so many hours in a day.

What is the most fulfilling part of your work?

I evaluate children with developmental and behavioral differences. I feel really good about my work when parents tell me that I understand their child and I have heard and understand their concerns.

What strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being?

I prioritize taking time away from work to be with my family. I give myself permission to leave some things on my to-do list incomplete so I can unplug and be present without distraction.

What advice would you give someone starting in the field?

Know that medicine is a long road and everyone has to make sacrifices along the way. What makes the time and effort worthwhile is that one ends up with a career that can be shaped and evolve throughout ones life to not only help many people but also achieve personal satisfaction.
