The Professoriate are faculty members at the School of Medicine who engage in scholarship, clinical care, and teaching that advances basic science and clinical medicine. The Professoriate Faculty are composed of 4 distinct lines:

•  University Tenure Line

•  University Medical Line

•  Non-Tenure Line - Research

•  Non-Tenure Line - Teaching

Emeriti are members of the professoriate who have retired from the university.

Adjunct Clinical Faculty are physicians in private practice who volunteer to teach in the clinical setting.

Instructors are individuals who have completed their postdoctoral training, have interest in an academic career, need more protected time for scholarship, and are in a transition period to a possible future faculty position (at Stanford or elsewhere).

Lecturers and Adjunct Faculty are teaching positions that may be full time or part time; these individuals may or may not also be employed outside Stanford.

Visiting Appointments are visiting scholars, visiting postdoctoral fellows, visiting instructors, visiting faculty. They are individuals from different backgrounds who come to Stanford for short term stays to learn, do research and teach. 

Clinical Scholars are individuals who have a concurrent appointment as a non-ACGME Resident or Fellow.  The Clinical Scholar part time appointment will allow an individual to provide clinical care or clinical teaching, or both, outside the scope of their residency or fellowship training program.
