Overview of California's Pay Transparency Law

With the enactment of Senate Bill 1162, California will join a growing list of states and local jurisdictions — including Colorado, Washington, and New York City — that require job postings to include base salary range information. There are two components to the California legislation:

  1. Employers with more than 15 employees will be required to include a reasonable pay range on every job posting. Employees are also entitled to request and receive the pay range for their current position.

  2. Employers with more than 100 employees must report additional pay data to the California Civil Rights Department.

At Stanford University, we are not only complying with this law but are also focused on ways to enhance our pay equity practices. We have worked hard to ensure that our compensation structure for both current and prospective employees accurately reflects the most current industry standards and market data. Stanford will continue to monitor implementation of the law and further refine processes and posted pay ranges as needed.
