The Leadership Development Program provides leaders at Stanford Medicine an educational foundation based on identifying, applying, and fostering the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary for physicians to enhance efficiency and collaboration within their professional spheres. The program was designed to gather a diverse and inclusive group of Stanford Medicine’s most qualified individuals for an enriching learning experience that uses the SoM and SHC’s mission statement, vision, and strategic goals as a basis.

Program Length: The course has 7 sessions throughout the academic year. Each session consists of a full Friday (8AM – 5PM) and a half day on the following Saturday (8AM – 12PM).

The program’s world-class Stanford faculty are joined by experts and influencers in leadership development in academic medicine to create a unique learning experience. Participants will benefit from an evidence-based framework for personal growth, learn key management and leadership skills, cultivate a deep connection with peers across institutions, and receive significant professional coaching that altogether provide a holistic foundation to understand, practice and cultivate effective interpersonal, management, and leadership capabilities.  

Who should attend: This program is designed for physicians who are early to mid-career. This program will be helpful for new section chiefs, department chairs in hospitals, physicians in private practice taking on more oversight and leadership, and younger physicians aspiring toward healthcare leadership positions.  

Program Length: February to July

• A cohort-wide Saturday meeting (2 hours, once per month)
• 4 small group coaching sessions (1.5 hours each)
• 3 individual 1:1 sessions with a professional coach
• Up to 5 hours of asynchronous modules per month

This introductory course is a prerequisite for all our more advanced courses. This fast-paced, interactive course will discuss the evidence that points to how coaching enhances performance and, in clinical settings, averts burnout.  The course will provide you with key tools and processes that support your incorporating coaching in your existing leadership, mentoring, and educational practices. After participation in this course, you will start to see notable differences when applying specific coaching skills to your repertoire: in the quality of conversation with others, both in the level of engagement by them and their continued motivation to achieve.

Each participant will lead a complex strategic initiative that prototyped future ways of working and serve as a “leadership laboratory.” Other SMLA activities include customized learning with an executive coach, regular peer consultations, monthly learning sessions and retreats, leadership networking, and structured leadership interviews. At the midpoint of the program, participants engage in a comprehensive multi-rated leadership assessment.

Purpose:

• To strengthen the capacity of faculty to shape the future of Stanford Medicine.
• To support the achievement of our vision
• To expand the range of talent and champions who can initiate and sustain effective change projects and processes.

Program Length: 18 months
