Anuj Aggarwal grew up in Southern California and studied biology and video game design at the University of Southern California, he then completed his medical degree with distinction in health professions education from UCSF. He completed his internship in Santa Barbara at Cottage Hospital followed by his residency in anesthesiology at Stanford with a fellowship in pain medicine. His academic interests include perioperative pain management, orofacial pain, medical education, and the history of medicine. Within the department, he feels lucky to mentor anesthesia residents as well as serve as the associate program director for the pain medicine fellowship. He is heavily involved at the medical school, teaching medical students as an Educator for Care (E4C) faculty member, serving as director of pharmacology, and as associate director for the Science of Medicine course encompassing the various organ blocks in the preclerkship curriculum, along with various administrative appointments within the school of medicine. In his free time, Anuj enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors with his partner, history/current events, reading and gaming.

Eric was born in Crawfordsville, IN and attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN where he spent several years working as a part-time dance instructor and full-time restaurant manager. After graduating with a B.A. in Spanish, he moved to Indianapolis with his partner, where he found a love for medicine working as an interpreter, rehab technician, and transporter at Eskenazi Hospital. He went on to receive a B.S. in Chemistry from IUPUI before starting medical school at IU School of Medicine. He was so happy to move to the bay with his partner and daughter for categorical intern year and anesthesia residency at Stanford. While at Stanford his interests have included Global Health as well as resident social events. Outside of work he loves swimming, hiking, and biking with his first-grade daughter and watching movies, dancing, and exploring the bay with his wife.

Andrew was born in Danville, KY, a tiny town of around 10,000 people. He grew up in Kentucky and Florida before making his way up the East Coast, first to Duke University where he studied Neuroscience and met his now wife, Anna, and then to Boston to attend Harvard Medical School. He made the jump to the West Coast for intern year (IM) and now residency at Stanford, and has been sufficiently convinced by the sunshine and mountains of California to stick around for critical care and cardiac fellowship at Stanford. One of the four chief residents, Andrew is interested in medical education, global health, all things related to the heart, and how we can compassionately care for sick patients. Outside of the hospital, you can find him reading (tell him about your favorite books!), cooking, hiking, skiing (he’s learned how to back-country ski during residency!), and enjoying the beautiful weather that the Bay has to offer.

Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Bateman served as the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Chief of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and as Co-Director of the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Bateman’s scholarship focuses on the study of medication safety in pregnancy and on predictors and management of maternal morbidity. To address questions in these areas, Dr. Bateman worked with collaborators at Harvard to pioneer the use of advanced epidemiological techniques applied to large, routinely collected healthcare utilization data. This research has been funded by multiple R01 grants from the NIH and by grants from the FDA and has been published in leading clinical journals including JAMA, NEJM, BMJ, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bateman’s bibliography contains over 300 publications. This research is frequently cited in clinical reviews and guidelines and has prompted both the FDA and EMA to make labelling changes to medications regarding use in pregnancy. Dr. Bateman is also a founding member of the International Pregnancy Safety Study Consortium (InPress) which is a collaborative effort between investigators from the US and each of the five Nordic countries to pool data for studies evaluating the safety of medications.

Dr. Bateman currently serves as Chairperson of FDA’s Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee after having previously served a 4-year term (2015-2019) as a voting member of this Committee. He was a technical advisor for the revision of the Joint Commission’s pain management standards. He has served on expert panels and workshops sponsored by the National Academy of Medicine, the FDA, the NIH, the CDC, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and on multiple grant review committees for the NIH and other funders. He is an Editor for the journal, Anesthesiology, and the textbook, Chestnut’s Obstetric Anesthesia: Principles and Practice.

Dr. Bateman’s work has been recognized by a number of awards including his selection in 2017 by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology as the Gerard Ostheimer lecturer and in 2018 by the American Society of Anesthesiologists as the James E. Cottrell Presidential Scholar Awardee, which is given to one clinical-scientist each year within 10 years of initial faculty appointment for accomplishment in research.

Faculty development and mentorship has been a central focus of Dr. Bateman’s career. He has mentored numerous trainees who have gone on to outstanding academic careers. He has worked particularly hard to advance the careers of women and underrepresented minorities in the Department and to create an environment where everyone is welcomed and has an opportunity to advance.

Dr. Bateman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate Yale College and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was awarded the Janeway Prize for the highest achievements and abilities in the graduating class. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and residency and chief residency in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a Masters in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Aaron Brown, MD is an Anesthesia Chief Resident at Stanford University. Originally from Chesapeake, VA, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biomathematics with a minor in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a Master’s in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Georgetown University. He went on to join the inaugural class of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, where he received the prestigious Gold Headed Cane Award.

At Stanford, Dr. Brown has served as SCORE Co-Chair for the GME Diversity Committee and was recognized with the Dr. Miquell Miller Award for Promoting Diversity and Inclusion. He is passionate about serving underserved populations and advancing diversity in medicine. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys traveling, attending sporting events with a special love for football, and spending time with his amazing wife and friends.

Natalie Bodmer grew up near Chicago, Illinois and did her undergraduate studies at University of Illinois, double majoring in Chemistry and Spanish. Prior to medical school she did Teach for America in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, teaching high school science and earning her Masters of Education from Marquette University. She then earned her M.D. from University of Illinois at Chicago. She was drawn to Stanford for the combined Internal Medicine – Anesthesia Program. She stayed to complete the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship. She was excited to stay on as faculty and works in the cardiac ORs, and on the periop team. She is currently the CA-2 and CA-3 didactic curriculum director and Associate Program Director for the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship. Her experience in education influences her work in medicine today, including teaching efforts such as curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, and learner-centric medical education. Her other interests include optimizing perioperative patient care through innovative technology and educational methods.

Dr. Caruso is a Clinical Professor of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He is the Program Director of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship and an avid Regional Anesthesiologist. He is also the co-director of the Stanford Chariot Program, which aims to reduce pediatric patients’ anxiety and pain by utilizing immersive technologies, including augmented and virtual reality. He spent his childhood in New Jersey before attending the University of Virginia, where he graduated with high distinction. After graduation, he earned a master’s degree in medical education from Johns Hopkins University, and a MD and PhD in education from Stanford University. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his two daughters and partner, running when he can, and cooking.

Marianne Chen grew up in Southern California and did her undergraduate studies at Pomona College, double majoring in Chemistry and Music. Wanting to spend some time outside of California, she moved to the east coast where she received her M.D. degree from Boston University. After a transitional intern year at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, she came to Stanford for her anesthesiology residency and then a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine. She joined the faculty at Stanford in 2014 so she could provide care to a diverse and complex patient population and continue to pursue her love of teaching and mentoring. Marianne is part of the adult anesthesiology Multispecialty Division and the liver transplant anesthesiology team. She has been involved in medical education since she joined the faculty, initially as the medical student general OR clerkship director and then as an Associate Program Director for the residency with a focus on the Internal Medicine-Anesthesiology Combined Residency Program. She became Program Director for the residency in July 2023. Her interests within medical education include feedback and assessment, perioperative point of care ultrasound curriculum, and mentorship/career development. She co-directs the departmental faculty development program focused on education, the Teaching Scholars Program. She feels very lucky to work in such a great department and hospital, with amazing colleagues and residents. With her husband and daughter, they enjoy golfing, traveling, cheering on local sports teams, and trying new restaurants in the area.

Born and raised in nearby Los Gatos, CA, Dora grew up exploring (obviously!) the Santa Cruz Mountains and rowing on Lexington Reservoir. She received a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, worked as an engineer in vaccine development and manufacturing, and attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She then returned to the Bay Area for her transitional intern year at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA, residency at Stanford where she served as a Chief Resident, and fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. She enjoys a dynamic and mixed practice at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center from pediatrics to trauma to high-risk OB and serves as Vice Chair, Director of Sedation Services, and anesthesia liaison to the SCVMC Burn Center. Outside of work, Dora can be found spending time with family and conspiring with her high school sweetheart-turned husband on a variety of endeavors including podcasting, t-shirt printing, and taking care of their two-year-old daughter Cadence.

Dr. Brice Gaudilliere was born in France, studied Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique before completing an MD-PhD degree from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. Dr. Gaudilliere joined the Stanford FARM program in 2009, under the co-mentorship of Dr. Martin Angst (Anesthesia) and Dr. Garry Nolan (Immunology). Dr. Gaudilliere is now a Professor at Stanford University, a board-certified Anesthesiologist, and the co-founder of a precision medicine techbio company (Surgecare). Research in the Gaudilliere lab leverages single-cell omics technologies to develop AI-based immune digital twin models for predicting and preventing adverse clinical events, ranging from surgical complications to maternal and neonatal pregnancy outcomes.

Lynn is Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) and a Clinical Assistant Professor Affiliate at Stanford Health Care. Lynn is a true Bay Area native, starting in utero when her mom worked as an emergency room nurse at SCVMC. She grew up in sunny Palo Alto, CA and received a B.S. in Biology with Honors from Stanford University. After attending medical school at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, she returned to the Bay Area for her preliminary medicine internship at SCVMC, completed her anesthesia residency at Stanford where she was a Chief Resident, and finished her training with a fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine at Stanford before coming full circle and returning as an attending at SCVMC.

Lynn is also an avid violinist and has served as the concertmaster of the Stanford Medicine Orchestra since its inception in 2022. She continues to perform solo and with her string quartet consisting of members she has played with for 25 years, but she mostly loves to play background music for her toddlers’ intricate home productions. She enjoys exploring food and nature around the Bay and beyond with her kids and husband, whom she met while rotating as residents in the Stanford MICU.

Dr. Cynthia Khoo serves as the Associate Program Director of Career Development for Stanford's Anesthesiology Residency Program and is the Co-director of the Division of Global Health Equity. She earned her MD-PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed her residency and fellowship at Stanford. Dr. Khoo's research focuses on advancing regional anesthesia education through innovative methods like immersive reality simulation and virtual workshops in low resource settings.

At Stanford, Dr. Khoo plays a key role in the Anesthesiology Leadership Pathways at Stanford (ALPS), a program designed to inspire and empower residents with leadership skills. ALPS offers mentorship, monthly meetings with leaders in the field, and opportunities for scholarship.

Dr. Kloosterboer is a Clinical Assistant Professor, currently attending in the MICU and working in the MSD as part of the liver transplant division and perioperative group. She earned her B.A. in Biology and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to starting medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, she taught English to high school students for a year in Seville, Spain. Dr. Kloosterboer was part of the inaugural class that matched into the combined Internal Medicine/Anesthesiology Residency at Stanford, graduating in 2019, before staying on at Stanford for Critical Care Medicine

Fellowship. She subsequently joined the faculty in September 2020 as part of the Critical Care Division and is part of the Liver Transplant group when in the OR. She became APD of the combined Medicine/Anesthesia residency in September 2023 and oversees the preliminary medicine year for categorical interns. Clinical areas of interest include perioperative optimization of liver transplant patients and procedural teaching in the ICU. Outside of the hospital she enjoys running (slowly), baking, and traveling as much as possible.

Dr. Macario is vice-chair of education, after having served for 17 years as the residency director during which time Stanford Anesthesiology trained more than 400 residents! As Vice Chair of Education, he oversees all of our education footprint which is quite large and includes many learners such as undergraduates, medical students, residents (about 100), ACGME fellows (about 50), the community at large including global health, and faculty such as those completing one of the dozen different advanced clinical experience programs the department offers.

Dr Macario’s clinical practice is with adult patients in the general operating room. He also serves as a hospital scheduler to provide management and leadership in the medical center's operating room suites. Dr. Macario has received numerous awards, including being internationally recognized with the Excellence in Education Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists given to one anesthesiologist per year for extraordinary contributions to graduate medical education.

He completed his undergraduate, medical school and business school education at the University of Rochester with the Wilson Merit Scholarship. He trained in anesthesiology at Stanford, served as Chief Resident, and completed a fellowship in health services research.

Dr. Macario serves as director for the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a member of the Anesthesiology Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. At Stanford he established a well-known academic program in the economics of health care and operating room management, including creating the Management of Perioperative Services program which has trained forty physicians from the US and other countries.

Dr. Macario authored "A Sabbatical in Madrid: A Diary of Spain," an award-winning travel memoir. He has two adult children one in San Francisco and the other in New York city, and lives with his wife in their home on the Stanford Campus. In his free time, Dr. Macario enjoys rooting for Stanford sports, biking up the local hills, and playing tennis.

James was born and raised in Western Massachusetts and attended The University of Massachusetts, Amherst for college. After earning a B.S. in Biology, he went on to attend the Larner College of Medicine at The University of Vermont, where he honed his appreciation not only for anesthesia and intensive care, but also for powder days and flannel shirts. James completed his anesthesiology residency at Stanford University in 2019 and served as chief resident during his final year. He went on to complete a critical care medicine fellowship at Stanford in 2020. James spent three years as a staff anesthesiologist and intensivist at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he split his time between the operating room and surgical and trauma intensive care units. He returned to Stanford this year as faculty where he attends in the MSD and the MSICU. When he’s not at work he enjoys mountain biking and spending time outdoors with his wife and their dog, Lily.

Marie is a board-certified anesthesiologist with additional board certifications in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Originally from the east coast, she received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She completed her anesthesia training at Stanford (Chief Resident 2013-2014) and her cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, TX, where she gained extensive experience in anesthesia for mechanical circulatory support procedures, transplantation and minimally invasive structural heart devices.

During her first 10 years out of training, she structured her clinical practice to span both the leading edge of academic cardiac anesthesia and physician training at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and pragmatic advanced private practice cardiac anesthesia at Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco. In both settings, she was well recognized for her field specific technical skills, as well as her ability to create successful partnerships across the cardiac surgery team. Marie was active in the management of her private practice in her roles as the Corporation’s Vice President as well as Managing Partner of the San Francisco Division. She also served as the Vice Chief of Staff for the Sutter/CPMC Hospital System.

In November of 2024, she came to Stanford full-time in her current role as the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Anesthesiology. She is striving to make impactful changes on OR and departmental operations, focusing on efficiency and optimal use of anesthesia resources. Marie embraces the challenge of teaching and training residents in the most complex of operating room environments and is passionate about modeling confident communication and strong operative team leadership.

Being a physician anesthesiologist is a second career for her. She was a banker for 10 years before an “early midlife crisis” challenged her go to medical school and become an anesthesiologist. She loves her days (and sometimes nights) in the operating room but also enjoys travelling, sailing, hiking with her dog Ensign, and is always up for planning a fun social event.

Julianne Mendoza was born in Fresno, CA and completed her undergraduate degree at Stanford followed by medical school at University of Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Stanford residency program in 2009 and the Pediatric Anesthesiology fellowship program in 2010. Her clinical interests are in patient safety and pediatric liver transplantation. As co-chair of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Safety Committee, she engages in process improvement work to minimize risk to pediatric patients in the perioperative setting. Her research focus is on perioperative management and outcomes in pediatric liver transplantation.

Andrea Murray, MD, FAAP is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. She was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky where she obtained her undergraduate and medical school degrees at the University of Kentucky. She is quadruple board-certified in Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, and also in Pediatrics. After completing her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, she worked as a lead physician at the largest primary care group in Memphis, TN which focused primarily on caring for the underserved, uninsured, and homeless populations – marginalized groups for which Dr. Murray feels a particular calling to serve. She later completed an Anesthesiology Residency and was elected Chief Resident at the University of Texas at Southwestern. She completed her Pediatric Anesthesiology fellowship at Stanford and in 2019 joined the faculty.

Dr. Murray was selected to be a Center for Innovation in Global Health Scholar in 2018-2019 at Stanford, where she began implementing new initiatives for the utilization of virtual reality in low and middle-income countries to reduce anxiety and increase perioperative safety. She is especially interested in sustainable global health models and serves on the leadership council for the Division of Global Health Equity in Anesthesia at Stanford as well as the American Society of Anesthesiology’s Global Humanitarian Outreach Committee and the Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology’s Global Committee. Her other interests include medical education, simulation, regional anesthesia, and diversity equity and inclusion (DEI). She is a faculty advisor and co-division lead for the Anesthesia Diversity Council and works toward novel ways to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. Additionally, her passion for medical education led to a current faculty appointment at the Stanford School of Medicine through the Educators-4-CARE program. In her spare time outside of work.

Ronald Pearl is the Dr. Richard K. and Erika N. Richards Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. After receiving his undergraduate degree in psychology from Yale University, he received his MD degree and a PhD degree in pharmacological and physiological sciences from the University of Chicago. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Stanford, followed by a fellowship in critical care medicine. He then joined the faculty in the Stanford Department of Medicine. Recognizing that anesthesia-trained intensivists had additional skills for critical care, he then did anesthesiology residency training at Stanford and became an Assistant Professor in the anesthesiology department. He served as chair of the Stanford Department of Anesthesiology for 22 years, from 1999 to 2021. During that time, he oversaw a dramatic expansion of the clinical, educational, and research missions of the department. Dr. Pearl has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His research involves studying the pulmonary circulation, focusing on cellular and genetic mechanisms responsible for the development of pulmonary hypertension. He also studies sepsis, respiratory failure, blood transfusion, and cardiovascular monitoring technologies. He has served as president of the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA), the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA), the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA), the Association of Academic Anesthesia Chairs (AAAC) and the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM). He is a CSA delegate to the ASA, immediate past chair of the ASA Committee on Innovation, and serves on the Committee on Academic Anesthesiology and the Committee on Critical Care Medicine. His clinical activities focus on cardiothoracic anesthesiology and medical, surgical and cardiovascular critical care.

Felipe D. Perez is a Clinical Associate Professor who is board-certified as an Anesthesiologist and as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist. He is the Assistant Dean for Diversity in Medical Student Education in the Office of Diversity in Medical Education (ODME) at Stanford University School of Medicine. His parents emigrated from Mexico and was raised in a low-income, immigrant, working-class neighborhood of Long Beach, CA. After receiving his Bachelor’s at Stanford he dedicated three years to public health policy where he worked for local, state, and national levels of government. He worked for Congressman Henry Waxman, Assemblymember Hector De La Torre, and Senator Alex Padilla, on laws such as preventing homelessness and having restaurants post caloric information on their menus. He returned to Stanford University for his Medical Degree and stayed for residency, pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, and was hired on as faculty at both the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Stanford Hospital. He is passionate about justice and diversity efforts, so in 2015 as a resident he founded the diversity efforts for the Anesthesiology Department. He is the Vice Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology for the Office of Communtiy Engagement. He founded CSA’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee and the Department’s high school outreach efforts: Project Lead the Way. He enjoys playing soccer and lives with his wife and daughter in Mountain View, CA.

Dr. Reece-Nguyen grew up in rural Texas before attending Centenary College of Louisiana obtaining undergraduate degrees in neuroscience, biology, and psychology. He then lived in The Gambia, West Africa for 2 years as a Peace Corps volunteer where he worked in a maternal health clinic and local school. He obtained his MD/MPH from Univ. of Texas - Health Science Center - San Antonio (UTHSCSA) before completing Anesthesiology residency at Univ. of Washington. He then completed his Pediatric Anesthesiology fellowship here at Stanford and then remained as Faculty.

Dr. Reece-Nguyen is a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist and Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford Children’s Hospital where he serves as a DEI leader in his department (Director of LGBTQ+ Health),

throughout Stanford Medicine (Director of LGBTQ+ Faculty, Office of Faculty Development and Engagement; Medical Director of the Gender Recognition and Affirmative Care through Education (GRACE) Program), and at the National level (Chair DEI Committee - Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, Vice-Chair of the LGBTQ+ Ad Hoc committee - American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the National Co-Director of the Perioperative Anesthesiology Registry for Transgender Adults and Youth (PARTAY) Collaborative). As a cisgender gay man, Dr. Reece-Nguyen understands the importance of LGBTQ+ advocacy work and the ever-increasing need for improved LGBTQ+ medical education, focusing specifically on the value of gender-affirming perioperative care. In his role as the Medical Director of the GRACE Program at Stanford Medicine and as the Director of LGBTQ+ Health for Stanford Anesthesiology, Dr. Reece-Nguyen’s work promotes perioperative gender-affirming care education, quality improvement, and research efforts aimed at improving the healthcare experience and perioperative outcomes for all gender-diverse patients. He is also proud to serve as National Co-Director of the PARTAY Collaborative, which is a multi-institution collaboration that evaluates practices and optimizes clinical practice guidelines for the perioperative care of gender-diverse individuals undergoing both gender-affirming and non-gender-affirming surgeries. He is also passionate about increasing LGBTQ+ diversity, networking, and mentorship within anesthesiology and improving the capacity of all anesthesiologists to provide optimal care to the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr. Reece-Nguyen also serves on the Stanford Anesthesiology Global Health Equity Leadership Council where he works closely with the global health residents. His passion for global health started during his 2-year service as a Peace Corps volunteer in The Gambia where he taught science, health, and midwifery. Throughout his medical training, he has had the opportunity to work on several continents focusing primarily on sustainable anesthesia education and capacity building. During residency, he received the SEA-HVO grant to teach anesthesia in Vietnam which helped solidify his passion for global education. Travis’ other global health interests include sustainable anesthesia education, decolonization of global health, anesthesia provider capacity-building, mitigating barriers to healthcare, and pediatric anesthesia safety in LMICs.

Dr. Reece-Nguyen also passionately supports mentorship and sponsorship of all medical trainees and serves as a National Advisory Board member for both the Medical Student Pride Alliance and Inside the Match.

Jose Rios was born in LA, but grew up primarily in Arizona where he completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Arizona. He then moved to Iowa for medical school at the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine. Jose's first exposure to Stanford came through his away rotation as a member of Stanford's Clinical Opportunity for Resident Experience Program (SCORE). He was particularly excited about the program's strong sense of community, strong clinical training, and support for resident professional development. Jose's professional interests include mentorship, advocacy, and research. His research focus is on identifying and addressing barriers to health equity within cardiac surgery. During his time as a resident, Jose has served on the General Medical Education Commitee (GMEC), and he is currently Co-Chair of the Chief Resident Council. After residency, Jose will be completing his cardiac anesthesia fellowship at Stanford. During his free time, Jose enjoys golfing with his co-residents, going to the Farmer's Market with his 2 year old daughter Eliana, and movie nights with his wife Madison!

Dr. Anthony “Tone” Sawyer is a native of Camden, North Carolina. After earning a BSPH in health policy and management from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, he spent two years in the Mississippi Delta, teaching high school mathematics through the Teach for America program. He spent the next 5 years earning an MD from the University of Michigan and an MPH in health policy from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He then completed a transitional internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, an anesthesiology residency at Stanford, and a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Children's Hospital Colorado. Since returning to Stanford in 2022, Tone has been an active clinician in the pediatric anesthesiology division and additionally serves as an anesthesia scheduler at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, as the director of recruitment in the department’s Office of Community Engagement, as a faculty mentor for the PRIME residency wellness curriculum, and as a steering committee member for the Stanford University School of Medicine’s LEAD (Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity) Program. Outside of the hospital, Tone loves traveling with his husband, where the two are always searching for a museum or restaurant to check out, and he enjoys spending time with his eight siblings and 18 nieces and nephews.

David Stahl, MD is a native of southern California. He attended Harvard College after which was awarded the Harvard-Cambridge fellowship to spend his postgraduate year at Cambridge University (UK) where he studied genetic epidemiology and music. He completed his medical education at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where he met his wife (first day in the back row). He couples matched to residency in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital where he stayed for critical care fellowship. He then worked for 10 years at The Ohio State University where he was the Program Director of the core anesthesiology residency program for 5 years. During his tenure at The Ohio State he was a leader across the critical care space as Division Director for Anesthesiology Critical Care, the Medical Director for Critical Care Services, and Associate Chief Medical Officer at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital (the third largest cancer hospital in the United States).

Clinically he practices critical care in our multidisciplinary MSICU and has a particular interest in obstetric critical care. In the OR is his part of the thoracic and gynecologic teams as well as attends on the perioperative service. He is nationally recognized as a leader in education, serving as chair of the Advancement of Technology in Education Committee at the Society for Education in Anesthesia, and on the Education Track Subcommittees for the ASA Annual Meeting for both Critical Care and Obstetric Anesthesia. He is currently the Education Committee Chair and member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP). He previously served council of the Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors (AACPD), as part of the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM). He is also an APPLIED examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. His academic interests include the use of technology in patient care and medical education, and exploring resilience and flourishing in medical trainees and faculty.

A former water polo player, he enjoys swimming and the beach, traveling and exploring with his wife, playing with his 3 busy children, 2 dogs, and (recently) 3 chickens. He also loves to cook and is currently trying to master the best way to prepare a California tri tip.

Patrick was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He arrived at Stanford in 2011 for medical school, and stayed to complete a master's degree in epidemiology and combined residency in internal medicine and anesthesiology. After graduating from residency, he was thrilled to continue at Stanford as a faculty member. He is currently the Co-Director for the general operating room anesthesiology rotation for medical students. Outside of work, he enjoys swimming, running, and cooking with his family.

Dr. Tawfik is originally from Montreal, Canada where she completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at McGill University. She obtained her MD and PhD in Neuroscience, with a focus on basic pain mechanisms, at Dartmouth Medical School before joining the Stanford Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine as an anesthesiology resident in the Fellowship in Anesthesia Research and Medicine (FARM) program, of which she now serves as the Director. After completion of her subspecialty fellowship training in Pain Medicine, Dr. Tawfik joined the faculty at Stanford and continues to research the immune contribution to persistent pain using clinically-informed basic science while also caring for patients suffering from chronic pain. Her lab uses a variety of approaches, from single cell sequencing to complex behavioral paradigms in mouse pain models, to investigate the contribution of spinal cord glial cells (microglia & astrocytes) to the transition from acute to chronic pain. She enjoys science, sushi, and snowboarding with her husband and two sons in her “free time.”

Dr. Tammy Wang is a California Bay Area native. After undergraduate studies at Stanford, she ventured to the mid-West for medical school at Michigan State University. The freezing winters brought her back to California where she completed a Pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland (UCSF Benioff). After a Chief Resident year, she worked as a Pediatric Hospitalist for four additional years before switching to Anesthesiology. After residency at Stanford, she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology and then joined the faculty at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. She currently serves as the clinical director of the pediatric anesthesiology division. Her academic interests include pediatric perioperative medicine, patient safety and quality, and resident advocacy and well-being. She loves working in the general pediatric OR and leads the board runner team also. She finds great joy from her role as Program Director for the Combined Pediatrics-Anesthesiology residency. When not at work, she loves cooking and eating with extended family in the area and raising her 2 very active boys with her urologist husband.

Dr. James Xie was born in Switzerland, grew up in England, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he calls home now. After studying Computer Science and Medicine at Stanford, he completed a combined residency in general pediatrics (at the Boston Combined Residency Program) and anesthesiology (at Brigham and Women’s). He then returned to Stanford for pediatric anesthesia fellowship where he subsequently joined the faculty. He is board-certified in general pediatrics, pediatric anesthesia, and clinical informatics. His goal is to improve patient care and promote health equity with health information technologies. Currently he serves as a clinical informaticist and Epic physician builder at Stanford Medicine Children's Health. He holds additional appointments in the Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology and Maternal Health and Division of Clinical Informatics.

Romy Yun, M.D. is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University and medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. After her anesthesiology residency and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Stanford University, she worked for a bay area private practice group with advancement to senior partnership. However, she missed working in a predominantly pediatric practice and returned to Stanford/Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Since returning to Stanford, she has been serving as Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship program and as the Outpatient Surgery Center Medical Director. Her clinical interests lie in developing methods for recognizing and reducing pediatric perioperative anxiety with the Stanford Chariot Program.
