Fellowship in the Management of Perioperative Services

Strong clinician, curious, hard-working, organized, excellent communication skills, responsible, visionary yet grounded, engaged and a self-starter.

We accept applications year round from residents and attending physicians. However, for residents we recommend applying in the beginning of your CA2 year. CA-1 applicants are reviewed and outstanding candidates may be considered for matriculation. We review CA-3 resident applications but the process of getting a California Medical License can in itself be 6-12 months so please keep this in mind.

The fellowship is customized to the individual and tailored to help achieve their short term and long term goals. There is a strong focus on leadership, quality, management, and innovation. At the start of the fellowship a 5 year career plan is mapped out through consultation with the fellowship directors and industry experts. This serves as the foundation for activities during the fellowship.

Management fellows have a departmental educational fund of $1500.  Fellows who present at a national conference may also receive up to $1000 in reimbursement for travel and registration expenses.

Yes. Previous fellows have moonlighted 1-2 nights a month at Stanford to help supplement income if needed. Although moonlighting frequency is monitored and excessive moonlighting is discouraged as it can interfere with the priority learning goals of the fellowship.

Clinical competence is priority one and continued development of patient care skills is essential. A strong leader is a competent leader. Clinical proficiency and maintaining a high standard of care is a requirement to matriculate and stay in the program. The fellow will work clinically covering a wide range of clinical practice settings including both inpatient and outpatient procedures. Typically the fellow will cover all cases except cardiothoracic and pediatrics.

Looking at the list of fellows from previous years, there is a large diversity of career paths that have come out of the program. Correct! One goal is identify which region, hospital, or anesthesia group you would like to work at upon completion of your fellowship and work towards that.

• Clinical work in OR one day a week as above
• Audit courses on campus based on interests. You can explore courses at any of the schools on campus and see if there is anything that you are interested in.
• 2-3 projects so that way there is always something going in at least one project
• Monthly seminar with physicians doing things outside of clinical medicine to hear their story/career path
• Weekly seminar where fellow presents article, project etc for peer to peer teaching and learning
• Attend national meeting (ASA) and other meetings of interest. These include for example the ASA Conference on Practice Management.
• Prepare for ABA oral exam if needed
