November 2023

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Nicole Arkin as the new Clerkship Director for the Critical Care Rotation (ANES 306A). Dr. Arkin brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to medical education, making her an ideal leader for this educational role.

Dr. Arkin has a remarkable track record of fostering the growth of trainees. Prior to embarking on her medical career, Dr. Arkin served as a high school teacher in the South Bronx of New York City. During this time, she observed first-hand many of the roots of inequality and recognized the importance of addressing these issues in healthcare and education. Her experiences as an educator have contributed to her unique perspective and commitment to improving the lives of individuals from all backgrounds. She is deeply committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within our institution.

Besides her academic qualifications, Dr. Arkin has distinguished herself as an outstanding educator. She taught a Capstone Course to pre-clerkship students during Q6, helping them prepare for the transition to clerkship.  She was subsequently selected as the course director of a board review course tailored for pre-clerkship students, further showcasing her teaching abilities and dedication to their success.  Dr. Arkinherself shared her vision for the critical care rotation, saying, "The ICU is a uniquely complex and fast-paced environment for medical students, while the team structure provides the time and space for deeper learning. I would like to better understand how medical students are most effectively learning on the ICU rotation and examine how we can better meet their learning styles in our unique environment."

Congratulations Dr. Arkin!
