• International Physicians interested in observing procedures
• International Professionals interested in observing procedures for educational purposes
• Domestic physicians or healthcare professionals interested in observing care for education or healthcare operations
• Medical Students currently enrolled in a non-Stanford medical school that are interested in observing care (this excludes medical students here for training related to a clerkship or externship)
• Students from Stanford or another domestic University
• Pre-med/Undergraduate student
• High School Students that are age 18 or over
• DO students - permitted to observe in all clinical areas including O.R.
• Clinical residents and fellows - NOT FOR EDUCATIONAL CREDIT

Visiting observers are limited to a 30-day observation period within 12 months. If the duration of the observership is less than 30 days, the observership would still count as 30 days. One day equals any amount of time spent physically on-site per day. Half days (or even 1 hour) spent on site are considered one (1) day.

The dates for the observership will be agreed upon by both the host and the potential visiting observer.

The months of July and August are not available for observership due to trainee transition.

Additionally, our clerkship program will be given priority if the same dates and subspecialty are requested.

The potential observer will be responsible for finding a willing faculty to host during the observership. A faculty host is needed for each subspecialty the potential visiting observer wishes to observe.

After reaching out to the program coordinator and receiving approval from the willing faculty to host, the potential visiting observer will complete a visiting observer form. The following list below will be the required documents to upload on the visiting observer form.

• CV
• Photograph
• Immunizations: Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines), MMR (positive titer or 2 vaccines), COVID, TB (within 1 year of visit, one QuantiFERON or two Tuberculin Skin Test (see two-step process link below), Flu vaccine (if visit occurs during Aug 1 - May 31). The content must be in English, and it is mandatory to provide evidence of both the dates and the outcomes.

Without submission of these forms, the visiting observer form will not be accepted, and a request form will not be sent until the program coordinator receives ALL the required documentation.

As soon as the visiting observer form has been summited, the program coordinator will complete a request form which will be sent to the compliance department and start the visiting observer process to obtain:

• Approval from the Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) compliance department
• A medical clearance from the SHC Workforce Health and Wellness

The time starts as soon as the request form is submitted. The process can take up to 3 weeks.

Unfortunately, Stanford does not provide a visa or housing for a potential visiting observer.

It is the responsibility of the potential visiting observer to obtain the necessary visa and housing accommodations. Airbnb or vrbo are recommended options for lodging, but additional options can be found on Stanford's website
