Gaining Access to the Network

The primary method for gaining network access is by our Self Registration service. This process can be used by most computers, Apple mobile devices (e.g. iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) and BlackBerries.

What is Self Registration?

Stanford Network Self Registration (SNSR) is a service that allows anyone with a SUNet ID to register their computer’s network connections with the School of Medicine. Simply plugging in to any network jack in the School of Medicine or connecting to the "Stanford" wireless network and then opening a web browser will direct you to the self registration page. The process will then register all wired and wireless network cards on your computer for use on the School of Medicine network. This is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7 as well as Macintosh OS X. This process is not compatible with Linux.

NOTE: Self Registration over wired and wireless networks will register all enabled network adaptors (both wired and wireless) on your computer.

When to use Self Registration over wired network

  • Your computer will primarily be used in one building or office. This will ensure you are assigned a specific IP address for use in that location.
  • Your computer requires numerous operating system updates. These will complete more quickly on the wired network.
  • School of Medicine wireless (SSID Stanford) is unavailable in your location.

When to use Self Registration over wireless network

  • Your device is a phone or other mobile device that only has a wireless network interface (no ethernet plug).
  • You plan on primarily using wireless instead of a wired network connection in the School of Medicine.

Process for Self Registration

  1. Your device must be set for DHCP (which obtains an IP address automatically).  This is the default setup for most devices.
  2. Plug in your computer’s ethernet port into any School of Medicine network jack.  This will give your computer an IP address of 10.65.x.x which will allow you to self register.
    To use self registration over the wireless network, connect to the "Stanford" wireless network. This will give your computer an IP address of 10.22.x.x.
  3. Open a web browser and follow the online instructions.
  4. The self registration utility will ensure the following requirements are met, and fix them and install software if necessary.
    a.  Current version of Sophos Antivirus is installed with latest virus definitions.
    b.  BigFix is installed (Bigfix is a program that Stanford uses to ensure all computers on meeting campus security requirements.  It is a small application that runs in the background and does not slow down machines).
    c.  Operating system is up to date with the latest patches.
    d.  User accounts with administrative privileges have reasonably strong passwords.
  5. When the process completes, your computer should be registered within 30 minutes.  If it is not working then, you may try rebooting your computer.
  6. If your computer is not working after that, please call the TDS Service Desk at 725-8000.

Exceptions to Using Self Registration

The most common exceptions to using self registration include:

  • Guest Wireless network access
  • Non-Apple and non-BlackBerry wireless devices
  • Printers

Other than Guest Wireless access, you will need to provide the physical address of the device you are trying to register. See How to Find the Hardware Address of your Device for more information.

If you have any trouble with Self Registration or have an operating system that is not supported by Self Registration (e.g. Linux), call TDS at 725-8000.

SUMCnet Access

SUMCnet is a special network that acts as a bridge between the SHC, LPCH and School of Medicine networks.
