Tools for Effective Teaching: Teaching Skills Workshop

for The Stanford Medicine Teaching and Mentoring Academy

In collaboration with Kelley Skeff, MD, PhD and Georgette Stratos, PhD, co-founders of the Stanford Faculty Development Center for Medical Teachers, the Teaching and Mentoring Academy offers a Faculty Teaching Skills Workshop that benefits both Basic Science faculty and Clinical faculty within the School of Medicine.

All interested faculty are invited to take part in the workshop. The primary goal is to introduce junior faculty to pedagogical theory and methodologies that improve teaching and mentoring through the School of Medicine and to encourage faculty to learn new skills that will support their development as effective educators.

Participants will leave the session with practical tools for enhancing their teaching effectiveness.  Participants will become familiar with an educational framework for analyzing and improving teaching. Topics to be covered include Learning Climate, Control of the Session, Communication of Goals, Promoting Understanding and Retention, Evaluating Learners, Providing Feedback to Learners, and Promoting Self-Directed Learning.

Normally offered as a two-hour teaching workshop, Drs. Skeff and Stratos are currently offering this session as a one-hour workshop to accommodate the demands of the Zoom environment. Separate sessions are offered for basic science and clinical faculty, with a goal of addressing the unique needs faced by teachers in each of these areas. The workshop is designed to be interactive and incorporates multiple instructional methods including mini-lectures, discussion of video re-enactments of actual teaching interactions, application exercises, and setting personal goals for future teaching.
