The Office of Faculty Development and Diversity (OFDD) and the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) created a centralized faculty training website with go-to resources for your professional development.

Resources are organized in the twelve categories below. Under each category are Stanford organizations highlighting the type of program, intended audiences, sponsoring unit, how to join, duration/logistics, details, and the website links/contact information. 

DISCLAIMER: The goal of this page is to showcase best practices in faculty development at the School of Medicine department level.  The programs highlighted are only open to those faculty invited in the departments. 


Anesthesiology

  • Anesthesiology Mentorship Program (AMP)

    The Stanford Anesthesiology Mentorship Program (AMP) is a structured mentorship program designed to support early career faculty. We aspire to equip our mentees with the skills and community support needed to achieve their career goals at Stanford. Stanford AMP harnesses the power of mentors, networks, information, and conversation to promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. Open to all faculty, with focus on early career and underrepresented minorities.

  • Mid/Early-career Advancement Program (MAP)

    The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine established the Mid/Early-career Advancement Program (MAP) as an accelerator for Anesthesiology faculty seeking to promote their professions through the intentional development of skills and attributes that are known to contribute to career growth and leadership skills. Participants engage in a series of educational sessions that utilize typical andragogic learning theories, including self-directed, experiential, and asynchronous sessions. Open to mid/early career anesthesiologists.

  • Stanford Early Enhanced Development (SEED)

    Stanford Anesthesiology and Perioperative medicine has over 200 faculty members. It is common for new members of the department to take a while to feel settled and to find their academic passion. The SEED program was introduced in 2022 to meet the needs of anesthesia faculty in their first year at Stanford. Through access to an online platform of materials and a series of educational and career development events, members are encouraged to build social connections with each other and faculty mentors and sponsors. Open to Stanford anesthesia faculty in their first year as faculty.

  • Teaching Scholars Program

    The Stanford Anesthesiology Teaching Scholars Program was launched in 2007 to further pedagogical training of faculty and improve residency and fellow education. Faculty who are accepted into the program propose an educational project they would like to work on to fulfill an educational need in the department and are encouraged to participate in Stanford Health Professions Education and Scholarship program to learn more about education methods and research. During the year long program, faculty are provided with a dedicated mentor and some non-clinical time to complete their project. Open to faculty.


Cardiothoracic Surgery

  • CTS Performance Science Initiative

    The aim of the Cardiothoracic Surgery - Performance Science Initiative is to introduce essential concepts of performance science and expertise to the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. All faculty and trainees are participants in a multifaceted program with the following core goals: 1. Hear directly from expects regarding high-performance; 2. Learn and discuss performance science; and 3. Have a forum to share what we each have found helpful/difficult as a CT surgeon - with a collective of support in each other's development. Open to faculty and trainees.

  • CTX

    CTX is a Women’s Faculty Peer Mentoring Group within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery with funding support and the explicit purpose of exploring career challenges, accountability, promotion progress/strategies, and leadership opportunities amongst faculty. We meet bi-monthly and twice a year we invite residents to join us for additional fellowship/mentoring opportunities for our trainees. Open to faculty and trainees.


Medicine

  • Leading to Equitably Navigate Searches (LENS) Diversity Program in Faculty Searches

    The Stanford Department of Medicine is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, students, and all individuals involved. With this commitment in mind, the Department has sought to place a greater emphasis on improving our faculty searches and recruitment by addressing modifiable factors, particularly in relation to diversity. To realize this objective, the Department has implemented the LENS (Leading to Equitably Navigate Searches) Program. Open to SoM & DoM Leadership focused on improving diversity in faculty searches.


Neurology

  • Neurology Faculty Mentorship & Sponsorship Program

    Following a departmental retreat in May 2022, the Department of Neurology revamped its mentorship program in 2023. Notable enhancements include (1) optional inclusion of all Associate Professors and Clinical Associate Professors as mentees, with mentorship from peer Associate/Clinical Associate Professors or full Professors; (2) formal incorporation of sponsorship into the goals of the program; (3) 15-20 minute presentations on topics related to mentorship and sponsorship at six Departmental faculty meetings per year. Mandatory mentees include all Assistant Professors and Clinical Assistant Professors. Optional mentees include all Associate Professors and Clinical Associate Professors.


Ophthalmology

  • SOAR: Stanford Ophthalmology Advanced Research Residency Program

    The purpose of this program is to educate and train the next generation of clinician-scientists in Ophthalmology. We will train current SOAR residents, fellows, and junior faculty together to discuss various aspects of clinician-scientist path in Ophthalmology. The program will seek to provide individual mentorship and build camaraderie for future leaders of ophthalmology. We expect this group will all become stars in the field and this will provide a forum for future collaborations and mentorship. Open to future residents and fellows in vision research.


Pediatrics

  • Annual Med Ed Forum: Innovations in Medical & Biosciences Education

    An annual half day event that highlights workshops to promote creating safe and inclusive learning environments, innovations in medical and bioscience education, and provides tools and strategies for participants to be effective teachers, mentors, educators, and leaders. Open to all educational faculty, fellows, residents, postdoctoral scholars, students, and staff.

  • ENGAGE

    There are 4 ENGAGE sessions each month: (1) ENGAGE: Teaching Fundamentals; (2) ENGAGE: Leadership; (3) ENGAGE: Medical Education Scholarship; and (4) ENGAGE: Career Development for Educators. These interactive workshops are held via zoom, and we offer CME and ABP MOC2. Open to faculty and staff.

  • New Faculty Education Orientations

    We hold 2.5 hour interactive New Faculty Education Orientations quarterly, focusing on (1) Creating a safe and inclusive learning environment, (2) Giving and receiving feedback, and (3) Promoting learner autonomy. Open to faculty.

  • Pediatric Coaching and Mentoring Program (PCAMP)

    Our mentoring program is dedicated to the academic enrichment, satisfaction, and success of early career faculty in the Department of Pediatrics. Our mission is to foster the professional development of early career faculty in Pediatrics at Stanford through a formal mentorship program and creation of the stable of mentors. Workshops held through the Pediatric Coaching and Mentoring Program are open to all faculty and trainees in the Department of Pediatrics. Open to Junior Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics.

  • Pediatric Peer Scholarship Communities

    The goal of this program is to promote academic efforts among junior pediatric faculty. The program will consist of peer scholarship communities of 8-10 junior faculty in specific interest areas (Advocacy/ Community Engagement, Clinical Research, Medical Education, Global Health, and Quality Improvement), facilitated by experienced Senior Scholarly Mentors. Open to Pediatric Junior Faculty.


Psychiatry

  • Department Leadership Academy

    The Academy seeks to invite faculty members to participate in a peer mentorship program focused on enhancing leadership skills. Given the positive association of faculty well-being with professional development and leadership opportunities, this program is aimed at improving professional fulfillment for faculty through joint leadership training. The Academy’s objective is to help faculty members interested in leadership roles define individual goals and challenges, and brainstorm solutions for barriers to success, while providing encouragement to their peers to continue to work on leadership skills. Open to early and mid-career faculty members on all lines.

  • Mentorship Program

    To support and facilitate career development through facilitating mentor/mentee experiences within Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Mentor profiles are displayed on website. Faculty seeking mentors select 3 faculty from which to be assigned a mentor. Open to all psychiatry faculty but particularly clinician educators; secondarily trainees.

  • Professional Development Consultation Program

    This one-time consultation model is designed to meet the needs of faculty who may have questions for which they can't find the answer and would benefit from brainstorming solutions with a more experienced faculty member. The goals are to create a supportive workplace by providing guidance on work related issues in a timely manner while enhancing faculty’s professional growth, workplace satisfaction and belongingness in the department. Faculty meet with the consultant for one meeting focused on a specific topic such as preparing promotion materials, career development on CE track, applying for education research funding, etc. Open to instructors and all ranks on the CE and Professoriate lines.


Radiology

  • Clinical Faculty Mentoring Program

    The Department of Radiology launched a formal mentoring program for clinical faculty under the guidance of the department leadership and mentoring council. Open to clinical faculty.

  • Radiology Better Together Educational Series

    Lack of diversity and inclusion in the fields of Radiology, Computer Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, and related research has led to biased algorithms and increased health disparities. This seminar series is designed to cultivate awareness and preparedness on topics of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in medical imaging, AI, and imaging research. Participants in the educational series will learn DEI concepts relevant to making their work more robust, as well as preparing for stipulations in academic work, grant writing and journal requirements around transparency, DEI, and health equity. Open to anyone interested in medical imaging and AI.


Surgery

  • Stanford Mixed Methods Research Workshop

    This 3-day intensive workshop was created for individuals who wish to design or analyze a mixed methods research project using qualitative and quantitative methods. Participants will complete the workshop with a personalized design and implementation plan for their projects. Open to faculty, postdocs, trainees, students, and private and public sector researchers interested in mixed methods research.
