Leading to Equitably Navigate Searches (LENS) Diversity Program in Faculty Searches

  • Affiliation: Medicine
  • Details: The Stanford Department of Medicine is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, students, and all individuals involved. With this commitment in mind, the Department has sought to place a greater emphasis on improving our faculty searches and recruitment by addressing modifiable factors, particularly in relation to diversity.

To realize this objective, the Department has implemented the LENS (Leading to Equitably Navigate Searches) Program. This program consists of faculty members and Faculty Affairs Administrators who collaborate to establish a more equitable, transparent, and efficient faculty search and hiring process while upholding standards of candidate excellence. Additionally, we have created the Faculty Recruitment Cluster within the Faculty Affairs team, which focuses exclusively on enhancing the search process and promoting diversity and equity.

Since its establishment in 2019, our initiatives and improvements have yielded numerous achievements. We have significantly reduced the time required to identify top candidates, expanded the size of our candidate pools, and made substantial progress in increasing the number of underrepresented ethnic and gender (UREG) applicants in both our candidate and final pools. Notably, these advancements have translated into a greater representation of UREG individuals among our selected top candidates.
