CTX

  • Affiliation: Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Details: According to the AAMC Physician Specialty Data Report (2017), among 4,411 total active CT surgeons, women represented only 7.0%, which is the second-to-lowest percentage of female physicians after orthopedic surgery. The Department of CT Surgery had only one female faculty in its entire history prior to 2014. Since then, it has successfully recruited and retained a total of 10 new female faculty adding to the one existing female faculty member for a total of 11 (18%). This is the highest representation among all US academic CT Surgery programs. Nationally, among 77 academic CT Surgery programs, the median number of female faculty is one, with 22 programs (29%) that have zero women on faculty.

Similarly, our residency training program is ranked among the best in the nation, but had only two female trainees since its inception in 1982. We now have nine (38%) female trainees. CTX is a Women’s Faculty Peer Mentoring Group within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery with funding support with the explicit purpose of exploring career challenges, accountability, promotion progress/strategies, and leadership opportunities amongst faculty. We meet bi-monthly and twice a year we invite residents to join us for additional fellowship/mentoring opportunities for our trainees.
