St. Baldrick's Foundation 2025 Fellowship Award

Deadline: May 29, 2024

Summary: This award is for two years of pediatric oncology fellowship training, with an opportunity for one (1) additional year of funding based upon need, significant accomplishment, and approved application. Applicants should be in their 2nd or 3rd year of pediatric oncology fellowship at the LOI due date. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a charity that funds research to find cures for childhood cancers and improve the survival, treatment, and prevention of these cancers. A university-wide internal selection process is required.

Number of applicants: Institutions may submit only one new fellowship application per year. Concurrent fellows with different funding periods are allowed.

Limited submissions policy exception: Due to high interest from donors and low numbers of past applications, a second Fellow application will be accepted only if focused on one of the following:

  • Brain tumors – all types, including rare forms, especially atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT), diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)/diffuse midline glioma (DMG), and glioblastoma (GBM)
  • Burkitt lymphoma – all types, especially sporadic
  • Ewing sarcoma
  • Rhabdoid tumors – Extrarenal

Amount of Funding:

Award is for two (2) years of fellowship training, with a possible additional year of funding based upon the demonstration of need and significant accomplishment. Fellows will be awarded the normal PGY-level salary for their institution. Fringe rates should follow institutional policy. Total award capped at $97,500 per year. All Fellow awards are to cover salary and benefits only. No institutional overhead or indirect funding is provided under the terms of the grant. See Budget Guidance section for more details.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should hold an M.D. or D.O. degree by the date the grant becomes effective.
  • Applicant should be in their 2nd or 3rd year of pediatric oncology fellowship at the LOI due date.
  •  Stanford clarification: An approved Career Development PI waiver will be required for selected applicants without PI eligibility.
  • Applicants may not hold an appointment of assistant professor or above.
  • Applicants must have a fellowship mentor who provides supervision, facilities, and research support at an American Board of Pediatrics approved fellowship program in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. 
  • Institutions must be located in the United States. Applicants need not be American citizens; however, they must work at an academic, medical, or non-profit research institution within the United States.
  • St. Baldrick’s funds may not be used for human embryonic stem cell research.

Funding Priorities:

Current funding priorities are divided into four categories:

  • New discovery research
  • Translational research and early phase clinical trials
  • Phase III clinical trials & infrastructure support of participating institutions (primarily the fall grant cycle)
  • Education of new pediatric oncology researchers

Institutional representative: not applicable. You do not need to submit your internal proposal through your institutional official for approval. You may submit your internal proposal directly to SCI via the online submission portal

Selection Process:

Proposals will be reviewed by a Stanford Cancer Institute review committee. That committee will select the applicant(s) who will represent Stanford.
