About SCI Membership

The Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) has achieved the highest designation from the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. NCI comprehensive designations are bestowed on institutions possessing a critical mass of cancer-relevant scientific, clinical and population-based research, as well as the ability to translate research findings into clinical applications. The major purpose of a cancer center is to promote discovery relevant to the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of cancer, and to capitalize on those discoveries to benefit patients and the community.

To that end, the SCI leadership would like to identify all of those individuals within the broad Stanford community whose research and/or patient care activities are relevant to cancer and to encourage them to apply for membership.

Types of Membership, Criteria and Benefits

Full Member

Academic Status: Faculty

Eligibility Criteria: Primary cancer focus in basic, clinical, or population research. Evidence of a cancer focus includes:

  • Cancer-relevant, peer-reviewed funding from a national funding agency 
  • Significant contribution to clinical research (e.g., PI on trials, writing investigator-initiated trials, enrolling large numbers of patients in clinical trials, contributing significantly to publications involving clinical trials) 
  • High-level accomplishments in cancer-related publications and presentations relative to peer group 
  • Support education/training or outreach in a cancer-related discipline 
  • Extensive collaboration with, and intellectual contribution to, the cancer-focused research of other members

Associate Member

Academic Status: Faculty

Eligibility Criteria: Emerging cancer focus in basic, clinical, or population research and/or makes significant contributions to the research of Stanford Cancer Institute members.

OR 

Cancer-focused clinical activities, including:

  • Providing clinical care for significant numbers of cancer patients
  • Participation in cancer-related disease site tumor conferences
  • Enrolling patients in cancer clinical trials (but not as PI or trial author)

Associate Trainee Member

Academic Status: undergraduate, PhD and medical students; post-doctoral and clinical fellows; instructor

Eligibility Criteria: Primary cancer focus in basic, clinical, translational or population research. Evidence of a cancer focus includes:

  • Significant contribution to the research of an SCI member (e.g., as a graduate research assistant, postdoc) 
  • Clinical fellowship in cancer-related field 
  • Cancer-related, peer-reviewed funding from a national funding agency 
  • Publications in cancer-relevant journals 
  • Instructors or research scientists who are on track for a faculty level position in academia or industry and are being actively mentored by an SCI member toward career advancement

Benefits:

  • Invitation to SCI seminars, symposia, and other sponsored events and opportunities
  • Priority access to SCI programming and events (e.g., Breakthrough in Cancer Research Luncheons, Comprehensive Cancer Research Training Program) 
  • Invitation to apply to SCI-sponsored awards, scholarships, fellowship or stipend opportunities (e.g., SCI fellowship, conference travel grants) based on specific eligibility requirements

Full and Associate Membership

To apply for Stanford Cancer Institute membership, please complete the membership form  which includes uploading your current NIH Biosketch. For any questions about SCI membership or the application process, please email  Karen Tran - kmtran@stanford.edu

All applications will be reviewed by the program leaders and the senior leadership on a quarterly basis. All applicants will receive a formal letter of appointment after the review. We encourage all faculty with cancer-relevant interests to join us in enhancing cancer research at Stanford.

Associate Trainee Membership

To apply for Associate Trainee membership, please complete the membership form which includes uploading your current CV. For any questions about Associate Trainee membership or the application process, please email Sei Lee - seilee@stanford.edu

All applications will be reviewed by the Associate Director for Education and Training and the Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination Oversight Committee on a quarterly basis. All applicants will receive a formal letter of appointment after the review. We encourage all trainees with cancer-relevant interests to join us in enhancing cancer research at Stanford.
