Academic General Pediatrics

Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship Program (non-ACGME)

The Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics, at Stanford University aims to prepare physician scholars with innovative methods for improving child health by securing an understanding of rigorous research methodology and building leadership skills as advocates for child well-being.

We seek applicants with interests in technology- and solution-oriented research that will improve child health through interventions at the level of the delivery system, the community, and/or the family unit. The two-year fellowship provides structured training in research methodology which includes study design, epidemiology, biostatistics, programming, behavioral research, and solution-oriented design. The training is complemented by opportunities to build other skills necessary for academic success.

Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Program

A three-year ACGME accredited fellowship program in Adolescent Medicine is offered by the division of Adolescent Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. The graduates of the fellowship program are envisioned as future academicians in the field of Adolescent Medicine. The program provides a balance of clinical experience, teaching and clinical research.

Allergy & Immunology Fellowship Program

The Fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at Stanford offers sub-specialty training to prepare Medicine and Pediatrics trained physicians for a career in Allergy & Immunology. Our graduates go on to academic careers, private practice, and work in biopharmaceutical industry.

Clinical Biochemical Genetics

Clinical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship Program

The Stanford Clinical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship Program's mission is to develop individuals with the technical and medical knowledge and leadership skills necessary to provide services that meet the constantly evolving needs of children and adults in the 21st century, and to train the next generation of laboratory scientists in Biochemical Genetics.

Clinical Informatics

Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program

The CI Fellowship program is excited to contribute to Stanford's long tradition of leadership in clinical informatics, which dates to the founding of the biomedical informatics graduate training program in 1982. Training in CI at Stanford affords fellows diverse applied clinical informatics experiences across Stanford Medicine, in various local health systems, and in industry.

Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics

Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics Program

The combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics program is a four-year program that combines educational opportunities in both Pediatrics and Medical Genetics and prepares the trainee to be board certified in both Pediatrics and Clinical Genetics. Our program has two positions each year.

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship Program

Fellows in this training program will become recognized leaders in the field of developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) based on their exceptional clinical skills, cutting-edge research contributions, outstanding education and training skills, and/or effective advocacy for children and families.

This fellowship program is funded in part by Maternal & Child Health Bureau of Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).

As an ACGME accredited program, this training program requires that fellows develop competencies in six areas—patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. In subsequent years, developmental milestones for each of the competencies will be integrated into the goals and objectives below. Simultaneously, the fellows must acquire knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics for board certification in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.

Laboratory Genetics & Genomics

Laboratory Genetics & Genomics Fellowship Program

The Stanford Laboratory Genetics & Genomics Fellowship Program's mission is to develop individuals with the technical and medical knowledge and leadership skills necessary to provide laboratory services that meet the constantly evolving needs of children and adults in the 21st century, and to train the next generation of laboratory scienctists in Cytogenetics and Genomics.

Medical Biochemical Genetics

Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship Program

The one-year program is accredited by the ACGME and prepares graduates to sit for the Medical Biochemical Genetics subspecialty Board Examination administered by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). We are able to accept one resident to this program per year.

The fellowship program seeks to attract physicans of diverse backgrounds and experience interested in pursuing careers in medical biochemical genetics. The fellowship is open to physicians who have completed a residency program in Clinical Medical Genetics & Genomics.

Medical Genetics & Genomics

Medical Genetics & Genomics Residency Program

Residents in the program benefit from a unique educational environment. Clinical training occurs primarily at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Residents also rotate through the clinical genetics laboratories at the Stanford Medical Center for experience in biochemical genetics, cytogenetics and molecular genetics. A variety of clinical and basic science research opportunities are available to trainees within the Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics and in the wider Stanford University School of Medicine community.

The residency program seeks to attract physicans of diverse backgrounds and experience interested in pursuing careers in medical genetics. The residency is open to physicians who have completed at least one year of residency training in another ACGME accredited primary specialty in the United States or equivalent training in Canada.

Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine

Fellowships in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine

Stanford University School of Medicine offers a three-year Fellowship Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. We believe that individuals who wish to train as neonatologists should value creativity, scholarship, clinical acumen, disruption of barriers, discovery of novel interventions, and service to the well-being of humanity.

Pediatric Cardiology

Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program

The subspecialty training program is a three-year program, integrating clinical care, teaching and research experience at all levels. The program is continuously reviewed and revised to reflect changes that occur in the field of pediatric cardiology. As the general goal of our training program is to prepare fellows for a career in an academic environment, fellows will find themselves being exposed during any given week or month to basic science, clinical research, and clinical care, as they will be for the rest of their career. It is the philosophy of our program that fellows should develop the habit of integrating their clinical and investigative lives from the first day of their cardiology training.

Pediatric Advanced Cardiology

Pediatric Advanced Cardiology Fellowship Programs (non-ACGME)

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology has made available several funded fourth year fellowship positions for the purpose of pursuing advanced training in pediatric cardiology sub-specialties. Fellowships are available in the areas of interventional cardiac catheterization, cardiac ICU, echocardiography/CT/MRI, cardiac transplantation/heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, electrophysiology and clinical effectiveness.

Pediatric & Adolescent Gender Medicine

The Pediatric & Adolescent Gender Medicine Fellowship is the first program in the nation to formally train a generation of physicians who not only understand the medical aspects of gender medicine but also to be leaders in the clinical, education and research aspects of gender medicine. Applicants will need to have successfully completed an ACGME accredited Pediatric Endocrinology or Adolescent Medicine fellowship to apply for this non-ACGME accredited advance fellowship. The program is currently recruiting its first fellows to being in July 2024.

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Fellowship Program is to develop the next generation of academic leaders in the field of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Our program aims to train each fellow to provide exceptional care of critically ill children, become proficient medical educators and develop discovery-based careers in academic medicine.

The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Stanford University is an ACGME-accredited 3-year training program with an annual program size expanding to 14 fellows. We offer a 2-year training program for eligible applicants who have completed scholarly activity in a prior ACGME-accredited subspecialty program.

Pediatric Endocrinology

Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program

The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program at Stanford School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford (LPCH) is an ACGME accredited 3-year training program designed to prepare physicians who are board eligible in pediatrics to become leaders in the field of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes in academic or clinical medicine.

Each fellow completes one year of clinical training and two years of either basic science, clinical or translational research and participates in grant writing and a quality improvement project. Clinical training is performed both on Stanford campus at the Mary L. Johnson Pediatric Ambulatory Care clinic and at Stanford Children’s Health endocrinology clinics located in neighboring communities, Los Gatos and Sunnyvale.

Pediatric Gastroenterology

Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

The goal of the subspecialty fellowship is to train physicians to achieve excellence in the practice of clinical pediatric gastroenterology, scholarly basic science and clinical research, and medical education. The goals of this program are achieved over the course of three years of training.

GI fellows accept graduated responsibility in the clinical management of children with gastrointestinal, hepatic and nutritional disorders under the direct supervision of a board certified pediatric gastroenterologist while rotating through the gastroenterology inpatient service and the liver transplant inpatient service. This responsibility includes patient care, parent conferences, consultations with other subspecialties, night and weekend call, and interfacing with the many services that interact with pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition, and liver transplant.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program

Our fellowship program provides rigorous training in research and clinical care. Fellows learn from our expert faculty and practice at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, ranked by US News and World Report as one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals. Clinical work includes rotations in the fields of pediatric hematology, oncology, and stem cell transplantation, and fellows may select research projects from any of these areas. Trainees engage with Stanford’s numerous clinical trials, aimed at finding new diagnostic, prevention, and treatment strategies.

Pediatric Hospital Medicine

Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program

We offer a two-year accredited fellowship in Pediatric Hospital Medicine. The program is designed to prepare the board eligible/certified pediatrician for a career in pediatric hospital medicine and to exceed all requirements set forth by the American Board of Pediatrics for subspecialty certification. Our vision is to produce pediatric hospitalists who:

Will be experts in caring for hospitalized children with a variety of acute and chronic conditions
Will be proficient in core skills essential to the care of hospitalized children
Will be academically productive, generating new knowledge and scholarship in areas such as education, quality improvement, performance improvement, clinical informatics, clinical research, and health services research

Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program

We offer a three-year accredited fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The program is designed to prepare the board eligible/certified pediatrician for a career in pediatric infectious diseases and to exceed all requirements set forth by the American Board of Pediatrics for subspecialty certification. Our vision is to provide training that is innovative, rigorous, and personalized so that fellows gain the knowledge they need to practice pediatric infectious diseases while being exposed to all aspects of the growing field of infectious diseases. Fellows personalize their path through the fellowship and prepare to be leaders in their field.

Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship Program (non-ACGME)

The Stanford Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship is a non-ACGME, one-year program dedicated to developing expertise in IBD through multidisciplinary clinical training, education, and research. The Pediatric IBD Fellowship Training program will be offered to only one fellow a year. The advanced fellow will participate in IBD clinics, endoscopy, inpatient and outpatient consultations for patients with routine and complex IBD, and will also rotate through related subspecialty electives including the adult IBD center at Stanford.

Pediatric Integrative Medicine

Ingetrative Medicine Fellowship Program (non-ACGME)

This fellowship is a one-year, non-ACGME accredited training program that features a concurrent 1-year of clinical training on-site at Lucile Packard Children's Hosital (LPCH) Stanford campus with a two-year (1,000 hour plus 3 separate residential weeks) distance learning curriculum with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (UACIM). It is housed under the department of pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine.

The successful finalist will enroll in the spring UACIM Fellowship Program in February 2018 and satisfactorily complete that program's online coursework and required residential weeks over two years.

Pediatric Nephrology

Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program

The Stanford Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship is one of the oldest in the US. We currently train 3 fellows/ year for a total of 9 in the program at a time. Our goal is to train people to not just be competent clinical nephrologists and outstanding researchers but to be people who will be leaders in the field. We want to change the world.

Pediatric Pulmonology

Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Program

Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship program at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. This program is a 3-year program that trains individuals to become board-certified pediatric pulmonologists with emphasis on clinical expertise and research experience. The fellowship is accredited by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The fellowship is supervised by the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at Lucile Packard Children’s Stanford as part of the Department of Pediatrics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Our division includes 11 pediatric pulmonologists, all of whom participate in clinical activities, teaching and research. The clinical program includes clinical activity at the 302-bed pediatric hospital with outreach outpatient activities in surrounding counties. Division members are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise and we emphasize making fellows an integral part of the team.

Pediatric Rheumatology

Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Program

Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program is to develop physicians that are clinically competent in the diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with rheumatic diseases and related conditions. In addition, we equip physicians with skills and knowledge to succeed in an academic health care setting. We encourage an atmosphere of life-long learning and professionalism.

The Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program is a 3-year ACGME accredited training program. The first year is mainly clinical and the second and third year is mainly research.

Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation and Cancer Cellular Therapy

Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation and Cancer Cellular Therapy Fellowship Program

The fellowship in Stem Cell Transplant and Cancer Cellular Therapy is proud to serve as a leader in the field of SCT & CCT and works hard to maintain high levels of quality and service that patients have come to expect. Faculty have extensive knowledge and connections within the cellular therapy community and are involved with cutting edge research nationally and internationally. Close collaboration with faculty in Pediatric SCT/CCT who have diverse clinical, translational and basic research interests, high patient volumes, exposure to novel cell- , gene- and immune-based therapeutic strategies, and a close collaboration with an internationally recognized adult SCT/CCT center will prepare the fellow for a successful career in the field. The one-year program is designed to provide an incomparable, well-rounded training experience while allowing for flexibility to address the fellow’s specific goals.

Pediatric Transplant Hepatology

The mission of the Fellowship Program in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology is to provide trainees with an academic learning environment that promotes wellness and inclusivity and fosters continual learning centered around the practice of extraordinary patient care and innovative research in pediatric transplant hepatology, set to meet the needs of children’s health in the 21st century.

Non-Departmental Pediatrics Programs

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Training Program (PEM) offers fellows from both Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine residencies rigorous and diverse training. While our primary goal is to develop fellows as excellent clinicians, fellows also have unique opportunities to become educators, investigators, and administrators, with access to the support and resources of Stanford University, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital, and the Department of Emergency Medicine.

The fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine was established in 2016, and is an ACGME-accredited program. It is designed to provide structure, but has flexibility to support an individual’s needs and interests. One fellow per year is accepted into the program yet there are many networking opportunities with fellows across the department of pediatrics and access to their core curriculum, research and grant writing curriculum, and fellows' council.

Child Neurology Residency

Our Child Neurology Division has undergone an exciting phase of expansion, and now offers the largest faculty in the Western United States. As a result, all residents experience great breadth and depth across all facets of Child Neurology. There are three child neurology positions a year (see Clinical Training).

Over the course of three years, Child Neurology residents spend approximately 12 months on adult (6 inpatient and 6 outpatient months) and 12 months on child neurology, with the remainder devoted to subspecialty rotations and electives. Child neurology rotations take place at either Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital or Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Residents are invited to join department of pediatrics educational offerings for fellows such as core curriculum and research and grant writing curriculum.
