Clinical Trials Unit
Stanford University School of Medicine's Center for Advanced Dermatologic Investigation is the Dermatology Department's clinical trials unit.
The Center is home to 12-15 ongoing clinical studies, investigating the safety and efficacy of new and currently available drugs and over-the-counter medications. The Center works with Stanford's own panel on medical research, leading pharmaceutical companies, and the Food and Drug Administration to safely and ethically expand the medical field's knowledge of dermatologic treatments. New studies begin regularly, and the Center continues to recruit patients with skin aging, sun damage, skin cancer (including basal cell carcinomas), psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and other dermatologic diseases for ongoing studies.
Skin Aging Studies
We seek to understand the human aging processes as it relates to skin on a fundamental level. To this end, our studies focus on clinical and translational research efforts ranging from: (1) the analysis of gene changes which predispose individuals to exceptionally youthful skin to (2) molecular signatures that may be biomarkers for aging skin to (3) the careful study of new candidate agents which might affect the skin aging process.
Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer
Recent advances in our understanding of basal cell skin cancer biology have enabled the development of cutting edge study drugs which combat tumor growth. We are currently home to a number of clinical trials at the forefront of potential therapy for advanced or metastatic basal cell cancer. In addition, we seek to understand the biology of basal cell skin cancers and to identify molecular predictors for treatment success.
Acne Rosecea
This is a common and frustrating chronic inflammatory condition of the face, usually affecting older individuals. The causes of this complex condition are the subject of much study. Our clinical studies seek to identify new topical or oral medications to improve the symptoms of acne rosacea.

A Study of Brain Aging in Vietnam War Veterans
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common combat related problems and may be associated with a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The purpose of this study is to examine the possible connections between TBI and PTSD, and the signs and symptoms of AD on Veterans as they age.
The information collected will help to learn more about how these injuries may affect Veterans of the Vietnam War as they grow older, as well as Veterans of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who also have these types of combat related injuries.Investigator

ATG-GCSF in New Onset Type 1 Diabetes
This is a three-arm, 1:1:1 randomized, placebo controlled, double- blinded trial in which at least 28 subjects will receive active Anti-Thymocyte Globulin and Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (ATG-GCSF), at least 28 subjects will receive ATG alone and at least 28 subjects will receive placebo alone within 100 days from diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
The primary objective of the study will be to determine the safety and ability of low dose ATG plus GCSF and low dose ATG alone to retain/enhance C-peptide production in new onset T1D patients demonstrating residual beta cell function. Now accepting new patients View Details -
Absorb IV Randomized Controlled Trial
ABSORB IV is a prospective, randomized (1:1, Absorb BVS to XIENCE), single-blind, multi-center study, registering approximately 2610 subjects from approximately 140 sites in the United States and outside the United States. ABSORB IV is a continuation of ABSORB III (NCT01751906) trial which are maintained under one protocol because both trial designs are related. The data from ABSORB III and ABSORB IV will be pooled to support the ABSORB IV primary endpoint. Both the trials will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Absorb BVS.
The ABSORB IV Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) is designed to continue to evaluate the safety and effectiveness as well as the potential short and long-term benefits of Abbott Vascular Absorb™ Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS) System, and the Absorb GT1™ BVS System (once commercially available), as compared to the commercially approved, control stent XIENCE.Investigator

Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial 4 (ACTT-4)
ACTT-4 will evaluate the combination of baricitinib and remdesivir compared to dexamethasone and remdesivir. Subjects will be assessed daily while hospitalized. If the subjects are discharged from the hospital, they will have a study visit at Days 15, 22, and 29. For discharged subjects, it is preferred that the Day 15 and 29 visits are in person to obtain safety laboratory tests, oropharyngeal (OP) swabs, plasma (Day 29), and serum for secondary research as well as clinical outcome data. However, if infection control or other restrictions limit the ability of the subject to return to the clinic, these visits may be conducted by phone, and only clinical data will be obtained. The Day 22 visit does not have laboratory tests or collection of samples and is conducted by phone. The primary objective is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of baricitinib + remdesivir versus dexamethasone + remdesivir as assessed by the mechanical ventilation free survival by Day 29.

A Trial of Dabrafenib, Trametinib and Hydroxychloroquine for Patients With Recurrent LGG or HGG With a BRAF Aberration
This phase I/II trial is designed to study the side effects, best dose and efficacy of adding hydroxychloroquine to dabrafenib and/or trametinib in children with low grade or high grade brain tumors previously treated with similar drugs that did not respond completely (progressive) or tumors that came back while receiving a similar agent (recurrent). Patients must also have specific genetic mutations including BRAF V600 mutations or BRAF fusion/duplication, with or without neurofibromatosis type 1. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an inherited genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue. Hydroxychloroquine, works in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells by killing the cells or stopping them from dividing. Trametinib and dabrafenib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving hydroxychloroquine with trametinib and/or dabrafenib may lower the chance of brain tumors growing or spreading compared to usual treatments.

A Study of Belzutifan (MK-6482) Plus Pembrolizumab (MK-3475) Versus Placebo Plus Pembrolizumab in Participants With Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Post Nephrectomy (MK-6482-022)
The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of oral belzutifan (MK-6482) plus intravenous (IV) pembrolizumab (MK-3475) compared to placebo plus pembrolizumab, in the adjuvant treatment of Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) post nephrectomy.
The primary study hypothesis is that belzutifan plus pembrolizumab is superior to placebo plus pembrolizumab with respect to disease-free survival (DFS).Investigator

A Study Comparing Oral Buprenorphine and Injectable Buprenorphine for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder
VA-BRAVE will determine whether a 28-day long-acting injectable sub-cutaneous (in the belly area) formulation of buprenorphine at a target dose of 300mg is superior in retaining Veterans in opioid treatment and in sustaining opioid abstinence compared to the daily sublingual (under the tongue) buprenorphine formulation at a target dose of 16-24 mg (standard of care). This is an open-label, randomized, controlled trial including 952 Veterans with opioid use disorder (OUD) recruited over 3 years and followed actively for 52 weeks. There are a number of secondary objectives that will be studied as well and include: comorbid substance use, both non-fatal and fatal opioid overdose, HIV and Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) testing results and risk behaviors, incarceration, quality of life, psychiatric symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder, housing status, dental health and utilization, and cost-effectiveness.
