Imaging specialists from across the campus will present their state-of-the-art research on March 29 at a symposium sponsored by the Center for Biomedical Imaging at Stanford. The third annual CBIS symposium, titled “Pushing the limits of imaging: Faster, higher, stronger,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the second floor of the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge.

Presenters will span departments throughout the School of Medicine such as radiology, neuroscience, structural biology and bioengineering, as well as from other schools within the university, according to CBIS director Kim Butts Pauly, PhD, professor of radiology-diagnostic radiology.

Rod Pettigrew, MD, PhD, director of the Bethesda, Md.-based National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, will deliver the keynote speech on the subject of biomedical imaging and public health. Other featured speakers are School of Medicine faculty members Stephen Smith, PhD, professor of molecular and cellular physiology, and Nobel laureate Roger Kornberg, PhD, professor of structural biology and the Mrs. George A. Winzer Professor in Medicine; David Ehrhardt, PhD, principal investigator for the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Stanford-housed Department of Plant Biology; and Sarah Nelson, PhD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California-San Francisco.

The symposium will also feature eight oral presentations of abstracts by Stanford investigators. More than 50 additional accepted abstracts will be on display in morning and afternoon poster sessions during the symposium.

CBIS is funded by the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine, Philip Pizzo, MD. Organized for the purpose of encouraging and interdisciplinary imaging collaboration, CBIS provides educational and networking opportunities for all groups on campus that use or have an interest in biomedical imaging applications. To help accomplish this objective, it distributes seed grants to campus investigators, primarily for research but also for teaching projects.

The event is free and open to the public. To register or get more details, please visit http://cbis.stanford.edu/symposium, or contact CBIS program administrator Teresa Newton at 725-4933 or tnewton@stanford.edu.
