Annual medical student research symposium May 14

- By Donna Alvarado

Medical school students do a lot more these days than just study for exams or practice the complexities of patient care. They also do research.

They'll have a chance to show their medical research and advocacy projects to the School of Medicine at the 25th annual Stanford Medical Student Research Symposium and the fifth annual Population Health Symposium on May 14. Students earning an MD or joint MD/PhD will present their original research carried out in laboratories, clinics and the community, locally and abroad. First-year students will also present their population health projects undertaken as part of the Practice of Medicine course.

In all, there will be 62 presentations this year on topics including 'overdiagnosis' in lung cancer screening and access to health-care and HIV services. Students will be available at their posters for informal discussions from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the atrium of Stanford Hospital. At 5:45 p.m. there will be remarks from Charles Prober, MD, senior associate dean for medical education; Laurence Baker, PhD, director of the scholarly concentration program, and Preetha Basaviah, MD, course director for the Practice of Medicine. The alumni association will also name the outstanding research poster and population health project at the close.
