Horwitz named Bloomfield Professor of Medicine

- By Margarita Gallardo

Ralph Horwitz, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine, has been named the Arthur L. Bloomfield Professor of Medicine.

Before joining Stanford, Horwitz was medical school dean at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He has investigated the link between estrogen and the risk of breast and uterine cancer, and the link between phenylpropanolamine (which was found in many cold remedies and appetite suppressants) and brain hemorrhage in young adults, among many clinical and epidemiological studies.

Before arriving at Case in 2003, Horwitz was the Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and chair of the internal medicine department at Yale. Under his leadership, research funding in that department more than doubled, and the nation's first PhD program in a clinical department was established. He also served for 25 years as co-director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale, where he prepared doctors to work across disciplines and in policy development.

The professorship was established after the retirement of Arthur L. Bloomfield, who served as head of the Department of Medicine from 1926 to 1954. Bloomfield, professor of medicine, emeritus, passed away in 1962.
