STEMbassador Program

This virtual program offered by The Tech Interactive (The Tech) matches local middle and high school teachers to guest speakers from various STEM fields. This program was initially developed by the Genetics Department, and we continue to support The Tech as it works to expand it. We would encourage any members of the Genetics Dept or broader Stanford bioscience community to participate!

Volunteer Eligibility

Anyone who currently works in STEM or is pursuing a post-secondary STEM degree is welcome. Whether you are a graduate student, industry professional, staff scientist, lab manager, or postdoc, you would be welcome as a volunteer.

Program Specifics

This virtual program matches local middle and high school teachers to guest speakers working in the field of STEM. This program is offered at NO COST to teachers in the greater San Francisco Bay Area — and you can help make an impact!

How does it work?

Volunteers are given access to the list of all open requests for speakers. Once you've selected a teacher who fits your schedule or interests, you will be introduced to them via email and begin coordinating the session from there!

What are teachers expecting?

A 30-60 min virtual session, tailored to the class's level and interests. Some teachers request a simple meet-and-greet followed by open Q&A, while others are interested in including a short age-appropriate presentation about the volunteer’s field of study or subject expertise.

What resources are available for volunteers?

Active volunteers will have access to all open teacher requests, detailed information on how to get started, grade-level science standards, sample slide decks, email templates, and more. Program staff are available to answer questions and help coordinate communication with teachers.

Do I need to be a “STEM expert” to participate?

No! We welcome volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. While most of our requests are for science-related topics, we also commonly receive requests for STEM professionals of all walks of life to share their personal journey and enthusiasm for STEM with an inquisitive classroom.
