Commission on Justice and Equity

The Commission on Justice and Equity—composed of external and internal leaders, experts, and advocates—represents an institution-wide, collaborative effort to dismantle systemic racism and discrimination within our own community and beyond. Critically, the Commission seeks to build upon the commendable work already being led by our community leaders and affinity groups. The Commission's charge is two-fold:

• With our community's input, the Commission is responsible for recommending strategies for strengthening Stanford Medicine's diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and our organizational culture so that we can better model the behaviors and changes necessary in our society.

• The Commission will also recommend ways that Stanford Medicine can assert a national role in addressing health disparities that continue to harm historically marginalized groups.

Commitments from 3 leaders— Shared June 30, 2021

In June of 2021, the three leaders of Stanford Medicine shared with the SM community their initial plans to address the findings and recommendations made in the Stanford Medicine Commission on Justice and Equity Report.

• Recruit a chief diversity officer and create a management and governance structure to oversee and amplify Stanford Medicine's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts.
• Optimize reporting and adjudication processes for incidents of discrimination and harassment.
• Incorporate DEI principles and standards into performance review and mandatory training processes.
• Develop a plan to become a national leader in health equity.
  • Explore the creation of a Center for Health Equity Excellence.
