Saeed Mohammadi Received 2013 BioNanotechnology Summer Institute Best Poster Award

Saeed Mohammadi, a postdoctoral fellow in the Multimodality Molecular Imaging Lab (MMIL), received the "Best Poster Award" for his research project "Integrated Field Effect Sensor Array for Profiling of miRNA/OncoMIRs" at the 2013 BioNanotechnology Summer Institute at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This research project is an NCI Alliance Challenge project led by Dr. Demir Akin at CCNE-T.

The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognize members who may have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. They may also have made significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the Society. Each year, no more than one half of one percent of the Society membership is recognized by their peers for election to the status of Fellow in the American Physical Society.
According to the APS citation, Dr. Wang was elected a Fellow for ³seminal contributions to biomagnetics, nanomagnetics, and magnetic recording emphasizing fundamental physics and innovative applications of magnetic nanoparticles, spintronic sensors, and materials.

Angela Zhang Wins 2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology Individual Prize

Angela Zhang, a high school student trainee in the Cancer Molecular Imaging Chemistry Lab (CMICL), has won the 2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology Individual Prize. Her project, "Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells", focused on designing a targeted gold and iron oxide-based nanoparticle with the potential to eradicate cancer stem cells through a controlled delivery of the drug to the site of the tumor. The multifunctional nanoparticle combines therapy and imaging into a single platform, with the gold and iron-oxide components allowing for multimodality imaging. The individual prize she received is $100K.

New biosensor microchip could speed up drug development, Stanford researchers say
A new biosensor microchip that could hold more than 100,000 magnetically sensitive nanosensors could speed up drug development markedly, Stanford researchers say. The nanosensors analyze how proteins bond a critical step in drug development. The ultrasensitive sensors can simultaneously monitor thousands of times more proteins than existing technology, deliver results faster and assess the strength of the bonds.

Drew Hall and Richard Gaster Won Inaugural IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition
Drew Hall and Richard Gaster, both members of Shan Wang's lab, have won the inaugural IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition for their magneto-nano handheld diagnostic devise "capable of diagnosing illness in remote corners of the globe".
