  • Filter Initial & Long Term Evaluation After Placement and Retrieval Registry

A prospective data registry for all patients who undergo IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filter placement or retrieval at Stanford. Potential enrollees will already be undergoing the procedure. If patients are willing, they will be prospectively enrolled prior to the procedure. As part of the study, chart and clinical data reviews will be used to track patient progress and response to the treatment.

  • Oxaliplatin, Leucovorin Calcium, and Fluorouracil With or Without Bevacizumab in Treating Patients Who Have Undergone Surgery for Stage II Colon Cancer

This randomized phase III trial studies oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, fluorouracil, and bevacizumab to see how well they work compared to oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage II colon cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. It is not yet known whether giving combination chemotherapy together with bevacizumab is more effective than combination chemotherapy alone in treating colon cancer.

  • NAC Phase IIB: A Multi-Center, Phase IIB, Randomized, Placebo-controlled, Double-Blind Study Of The Effects Of N-Acetylcysteine On Redox Changes and Lung Inflammation In Cystic Fibrosis Patients

This Phase IIB proof-of-concept study would examine the effects of an investigational product called N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on the basic processes that cause inflammation in CF lung disease. We hope to learn more about the causes of lung disease in cystic fibrosis by studying the characteristics of the inflammation in the lungs of patients who have CF.

  • Identification of Secreted Markers for Tumor Hypoxia in Patients With Head and Neck or Lung Cancers

The purpose of this study is to identify and confirm new blood and tissue markers for prognosis and tumor hypoxia. Tumor hypoxia, or the condition of low oxygen in the tumor, has been shown to increase the risk of tumor spread and enhance tumor resistance to the standard treatment of radiation and chemotherapy in head and neck and lung cancers. We have recently identified several proteins or markers in the blood and in tumors (including osteopontin, lysyl oxidase, macrophage inhibiting factor and proteomic technology) in the laboratory that may be able to identify tumors with low oxygen levels or more aggressive behaving tumors.

  • Feasibility of Home-based Virtual Reality Rehabilitation for the Upper Extremity in Subacute and Chronic Stroke

Regaining upper extremity function is very important for stroke survivors to increase their independence and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Outpatient stroke rehabilitation currently takes place in a therapy clinic, however access can be limited by financial resources and transportation difficulties.

The Feasibility of Home-Based Virtual Reality Rehabilitation for the Upper Extremity in Subacute and Chronic Stroke Study seeks to explore the safety, usability, and efficacy of a home based virtual reality biofeedback system to promote distal upper extremity (wrist and hand) recovery after stroke. The purpose of the study is to assess the feasibility of using a home-based virtual reality system to increase the dose of upper extremity rehabilitation in subacute and chronic stroke patients.

  • Oral Rigosertib in Low Risk MDS Patients Refractory to ESAs

The study will enroll low risk MDS patients who need red blood cell transfusions and who are refractory to or are not using erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. The purpose of the study is to determine whether oral rigosertib treatment results in hematological improvements according to the 2006 International Working Group criteria in these patients. The study will also record any side effects that may occur during the study.

  • Focal MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound Treatment of Localized Low-Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer: Feasibility Study

The hypothesis of this feasibility study is that focal treatment with ExAblate MRgFUS has the potential to be a safe and effective non-invasive treatment for low to intermediate risk, organ-confined prostate cancer involving low incidence of morbidity. The study hypothesis will be tested by measuring treatment-related safety and initial effectiveness parameters in the ExAblate MRgFUS treated patients, as described above.

Based on the result of this study, InSightec will initiate a larger study in an effort to approve low risk, organ-confined prostate cancer as an indication for its ExAblate MRgFUS device.

  • Midostaurin in Treating Older Patients With Mutated Acute Myeloid Leukemia Post-Transplant

This phase 2 trial studies the side effects and how well midostaurin works in treating older patients with acute myeloid leukemia with change in genetic material post-hematopoietic cell transplantation. Midostaruin may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving midostaruin post-transplant may improve patient outcomes.

  • Feasibility of a Mobile Medication Plan Application in CF Patient Care

This is a pilot, multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled study to evaluate the feasibility of an innovative medication adherence intervention utilizing a web-based, mobile medication management application [MedActionPlan® (MAP)] to encourage self-management by reinforcing adherence and education about treatment regimens in Participants with cystic fibrosis (CF) (ages 12 years and older).

Outcomes of interest for this study are 1) feasibility of MAP in real-world setting which will be evaluated using patient/caregiver and clinician feedback regarding value, ease of use, and challenges with use, 2) effect of MAP on patient/caregiver knowledge and perception of medication use, 3) effect of MAP on adherence to inhaled and oral medications used in chronic management of CF. Preliminary data regarding outcomes on exacerbations, lung function, and health care system utilization (e.g., emergency department visits, hospitalization) will also be examined as part of this study.

  • Natural History Study of Patients With X-linked Retinal Dystrophy Associated With Mutations in Retinitis Pigmentosa GTPase Regulator (RPGR)

The rod-cone dystrophies (often referred to as retinitis pigmentosa (RP)) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders in which there is progressive loss of rod and later cone photoreceptor function leading to severe visual impairment. RP usually occurs as an isolated retinal disorder, but it may also be seen in association with systemic abnormalities.

  • Early Intervention in Cystic Fibrosis Exacerbation

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) develop chronic lung infections and suffer intermittent acute exacerbations of their lung disease. Most exacerbations are not treated until they cause increased symptoms, and patients seek medical attention. This proposal details a study of home lung function and symptom monitoring. Subjects will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) home monitoring, in which spirometry and symptoms are recorded; or 2) standard care. The home monitoring data will be transmitted electronically to the study center. If spirometry or symptoms have deteriorated substantially, treatment for a CF pulmonary exacerbation will be initiated. It is anticipated that use of home monitoring will lead to earlier, more reliable recognition and treatment of exacerbations, which will translate into better lung health.
