Smart Toilet Featured in The Wall Street Journal

September 9th, 2021

The Department of Radiology is pleased to announce the smart toilet developed at Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics Center at Stanford (PHIND) has recently been featured in the Wall Street Journal's The Future of Everything: Health.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the toilet bowl uses a machine-learning algorithm to analyze the waste against a diagnostic chart. It can also track the flow, color and volume of urine, and provide other insights into a person’s health.

A “lab-on-a-chip” device built into the toilet will analyze micro stool samples to detect viruses like Covid-19 and blood, says Seung-min Park, PhD, the lead researcher on the project, which was started by Sam Sanjiv Gambhir, MD, PhD and former chair of the Department of Radiology.
