Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) and the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association (SMAA)?

The Stanford Medicine Alumni Association (SMAA) is a separate organization from the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA).

All degree recipients from the School of Medicine are automatically members of SMAA. If you were a postdoc, resident, intern, or medical fellow at Stanford, you are also automatically a member of SMAA.

SAA recognizes all Stanford University degree recipients as alumni, and offers basic services to this group. In addition, you may join SAA as an annual or lifetime member to receive additional benefits (fees required). For more information on membership, please visit the Stanford Alumni Association Membership website.

If you have completed a minimum of three academic quarters as a matriculated, degree-seeking student in a degree-granting program, you are a member of both Alumni Associations.

As a member of SMAA, you receive:

  1. Access to the School of Medicine Alumni Directory
  2. A Stanford email account, at no charge to you from the Stanford Alumni Association. To obtain your email account, please see instructions here.  Stanford Medicine certificate holders (interns, residents, medical fellows, and postdocs) are not eligible for an email address through SAA.
  3. Invitations to Stanford Medicine Alumni Day and SMAA/SAA events in your area
  4. Services in career and professional development
  5. Access to a myriad of opportunities in continuing education and travel
  6. Stanford Medicine Magazine

Who is considered an alumnus/a of Stanford Medicine?

Anyone who finished three quarters of a degree-granting program at the School of Medicine and all former Stanford Medicine postdocs, residents, interns, and fellows.

How do I become a member of SMAA?

Anyone who finished three quarters of a degree-granting program at the School of Medicine and all former Stanford Medicine postdocs, residents, interns, and fellows are automatically members of SMAA. There are no membership fees.

How do I get an “@alumni.stanford.edu” email address?

Stanford School of Medicine degree holders (MD or PhD) are eligible for an exclusive, Stanford alumni-only email address for free.

Here's what to do:

Step 1: Click here to visit the Stanford Alumni Association website.
Step 2: Create a username a password, if you have not yet registered.
Step 3: SAA will take it from there!

Stanford Medicine certificate holders (interns, residents, fellows, and postdocs) are not eligible for email addresses through SAA.

I receive too much/not enough mail from Stanford. How do I change my mailing preferences?

We can tailor what kind of mail you receive from Stanford according to your personal preferences. Do you only want to hear from Stanford Medicine, or do you want to get on a mailing list you're not currently on? Perhaps you do not want to receive paper mailings or phone calls, but emails are okay? Contact us and let us know how you'd prefer to hear from Stanford.

I don't want to be part of the online directory. How do I change my privacy settings?

To opt out of being listed in the online directory, you'll need to log in here with your username and password. Once you have logged into your profile, click on Privacy Settings. You will have the option to hide all information except for your name and year of graduation.

I want to get in touch with a fellow alumnus/a. How do I get his/her contact information?

The best way to find a fellow alumnus/a is through a search of our online directory. To create a username and password, you'll need your Stanford University Identification Number (SUID) or your degree, birthdate, and major. If you do not have your SUID, it may take up to five business days to verify your information before you can receive full access privileges.

If you are not an alumnus/a or do not have internet access, you can contact us with the first and last name of the person you are trying to reach along with your contact information. In order to protect the privacy of our alumni, we will contact the alumnus/a on your behalf.

How do I order an MD degree verification?

Stanford University has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to act as its agent for purposes of degree verification. The student's name when enrolled, Social Security Number, and date of birth will be required for identification purposes and degree verification. See the National Student Clearinghouse Degree Verify website regarding degree verification information, instructions, and fees. If additional information is needed after the NSC degree verification, contact the School of Medicine Registrar's Office or visit http://med.stanford.edu/md/academic-support/registrar.html

How do I order a paper transcript or electronic transcript?

  • Alumni enrolled at Stanford within the last 5 years can order transcripts through Axess. For detailed instructions see Transcripts for Alumni.

  • Alumni enrolled at Stanford longer than 5 years ago can submit the Transcript Request Form. For detailed instructions, and the form, see Transcripts for Alumni.

How do I purchase Stanford University merchandise like sweatshirts, caps, and t-shirts?

Visit one of the Stanford-affiliated providers on campus or online by viewing the Stanford Merchandise Directory.

As a degree holding alumnus/a, may I use the libraries on campus?

School of Medicine graduates and past post-doctoral fellows, residents, and interns receive courtesy access to Lane Medical Library as well as borrowing privileges. You must bring a picture ID to register for borrowing privileges. However, alumni are NOT granted access to the online library.  Questions?  Call 650-725-6092 or visit the Lane Medical Library website.

All Stanford degree recipients are entitled to seven free days of access per year at Green, Lathrop, and Jackson (Graduate School of Business) libraries. Dues-paying members of the Stanford Alumni Association are entitled to an additional seven free days of access per year.

To obtain your access card for Green and Lathrop libraries, please go to the Visitor Registration Kiosk in Green library Monday-Friday between 8AM-5PM. To obtain your access card for Jackson library, bring a photo ID to the Jackson Privileges desk. Don't forget your membership card.
