Glia make up more than half of the cells in the human brain, but we are just beginning to understand the complex and multifactorial role glia play in health and disease. Glia are decidedly dynamic in form and function. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this dynamic nature of glia is imperative to developing novel therapeutic strategies for diseases of the nervous system that involve aberrant gliogenesis, especially related to changes in myelination.

I'm interested in questions regarding perceived experiences and measured markers of those experiences, for example how do perceived sleep quality relate to sleep quality measured, or how does daytime sleepiness relate to sleep quality at night.
Other interests include effects of daytime light exposure on nighttime sleep, circadian clock phase changes by flashes of light, and how stability and variability in daily rhythms can predict health and disease

Long-lasting changes in synaptic strength are important for the modification of neural circuits by experience. A major goal of my laboratory is to elucidate the molecular events that trigger various forms of synaptic plasticity and the modifications in synaptic proteins that are responsible for the changes in synaptic efficacy.
