Welcome to Joseph Liao Laboratory

The overarching theme of our research is development of optical imaging technologies for cancer surgery and molecular diagnostics for urological cancer and infections. Our research is highly translational in nature and interfaces molecular biology, genomics, imaging science, bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine.

Our major areas of research include:

  1. Enhanced and augmented endoscopic imaging technologies to improve bladder cancer detection and surgery
  2. Multi-omic urine liquid biopsy technologies to improve bladder cancer detection and treatment monitoring
  3. Medical device development for rapid diagnosis of urinary tract infections and kidney stone surgery.

We are affiliated with Department of Urology, VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Stanford Cancer Institute, Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Imaging, and Canary Center for Cancer Early Detection.

Breakthroughs in Prostate and Bladder Cancer Research: Augmented Imaging and Liquid Biopsy of Bladder Cancer

Dr. Liao shares his research into harnessing the diagnostic potential of urine using liquid biopsy technologies and real-time integration of AI during surgery to improve bladder cancer detection. Part of the Breakthroughs in Prostate and Bladder Cancer Treatment event on June 14, 2022 at the Center for Academic Medicine.
