Introduction

Welcome to the Inclusive Language Approach for Research page of the Carmichael Lab!

We are a team of researchers who are committed to finding ways to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and equity. A large part of this mission consists of conceptualizing and conveying our work with an inclusive lens.

The purpose of this page is to serve as a living and evolving resource for our team (and beyond) to support our commitment to intentional, transparent, equity-focused, and humble use of inclusive language throughout research production. While the primary audience for this page is public health academic researchers, we hope the content may be useful to other groups as well.

Because our team’s work focuses on finding ways to improve health outcomes and address inequities experienced by birthing people and infants, the inclusive language content presented focuses on topics related to birthing experiences and those who have the capacity to be pregnant and give birth. However, we believe the content is just as relevant for work in other spaces.

We believe the use of “inclusive language” in research requires deliberate and thoughtful decision-making about how to develop research, present topics, describe groups of people in studies, and conceptualize the implications of our research more broadly. We see language use as “inclusive” if it is:

  1. Based on the priorities and preferences of the groups being discussed

  2. Grounded in historical and contemporary contexts of power and oppression

For this reason, the inclusive language topics we discuss relate to historically and contemporarily stigmatized and/or marginalized identities, actions, and concepts.

The content of this page is not intended to be the last word on inclusive language. Rather, it is meant to be a beginning – a jumping off point for continued reflection and evolution alongside our changing world.
