The preconception visit is to optimize IBD control, review medication safety and support nutrition prior to getting pregnant. This is important to ensure the best outcomes for both you and your baby.
Visits once every trimester help ensure your IBD is stable and your pregnancy is progressing well. Your medication dosing will be tailored to benefit both you and baby. You may be seen more frequently if you have active disease and require modifications to your treatment plan.
Since some women are at risk for having a flare of their IBD after delivery, this visit will ensure you are healthy so that you can enjoy your time with your new baby. This visit will also provide information regarding breastfeeding and your medications.
We will provide all patients with information on vitamin supplementation and healthy eating recommendations to nourish you and your microbiome. Patients who need more intensive assistance with nutrition can be referred to our GI nutritionist for consultation.
Growing your family is exciting but can be stressful. We are developing a peer support program to help women learn from the experiences of other women who have dealt with the challenges involved with having IBD and being pregnant. More information on this coming soon!
In order to be seen as a new patient, please request a referral from an existing physician that cares for you (such as a primary care doctor, your primary GI doctor or your obstetrician). Our program is a concurrent care model, which means that we will provide fertility and pregnancy-related care and collaborate with your primary GI doctor and OB to formulate a treatment plan throughout your pregnancy.
