Division of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging

The Division of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging aims to develop and deliver high quality imaging and image-guided procedures for patients with bone, joint, and soft tissue abnormalities.

WELCOME

The Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging (MSK) consists of 11 nationally and internationally renowned Faculty and five MSK Fellows. There are also five MSK Affiliated Faculty at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System.

The MSK service is one of the busiest and highest profile divisions in the Department of Radiology serving Stanford Health Care (SHC) which includes SHC ValleyCare and University HealthCare Alliance (UHA). Systemwide, SHC has a total of 36 MR scanners: 17 GE scanners, two 1.5T scanners, 15 3T scanners, one 3T Siemens Skyra and one 3T Phillips Ingenia scanner. We perform approximately 100,000 MSK exams including approximately 10,000 MRI studies and 1,000 injection and interventional procedures.

Comprehensive MSK services are provided across Stanford Health Care including the Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City. MSK imaging at this outpatient center has six diagnostic x-ray rooms, two 3T MRI scanners, a multidetector CT scanner, two radiography and fluoroscopy rooms, and an ultrasound room, all immersed in a beautifully appointed facility staffed with highly talented and committed staff.

Musculoskeletal imaging Faculty and Fellows provide interpretation of skeletal radiographs (x-rays), MRI, CT, and diagnostic ultrasound (US). Using fluoroscopy or US guidance, we inject or aspirate joints, tendon sheaths and benign soft tissue collections. Additionally, We provide MSK imaging and image-guided therapeutic procedures to Stanford athletes.

Recent enhancements to the clinical service include improved methods for MRI in patients with metallic implants, MR neurography, and MSK interventional procedures.
