Build on Stanford Medicine’s already successful partnership with Meharry Medical College to include medical students from all four HBCU medical schools (Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine)and expand it to include a visiting faculty exchange program.

We have launched the Stanford Medicine Racial Equity to Advance a Community of Health (REACH) Initiative, under the auspices of the Commission on Justice and Equity. A key deliverable under REACH is a commitment to build bi-directional collaborations with Historically Black Medical Colleges (HBMC). This specific effort will be led by Drs. Hannah Valantine and Abraham Verghese.
The engagement of HBMC trainees is building upon the pilot launched by Presence (a Center at Stanford Medicine) and the Department of Medicine, under the leadership of Dr. Abraham Verghese and colleagues. It began with Meharry Medical School in 2017 and has successfully hosted second year Meharry medical students for 8-weeks of research ever since. In the summer of 2021, Presence was joined by the Departments of Radiology and Pathology, and virtually hosted 23 summer trainees in 23 labs. Each trainee received a stipend ($8,000), was paired with a faculty lab, and earned academic credit at Meharry based on a published paper, report, poster, et al. See the 2017, 2018, and 2019 cohorts.
In 2022, REACH funding expanded the program and we welcomed 48 candidates from Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Howard University. They were mentored by labs and mentors across the School of Medicine. In the Academic Year 2022-23, we welcome Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science to this program!
