STUDY GOAL

To investigate the brain basis of mathematical skill development in children with and without learning disabilities. 

PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE:

  • Right handed
  • Between the ages of 5 and 11
  • Without metal in body

PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE:

  • Up to $380 for completing the study
  • Pictures of their brain for each year of participation
  • A Stanford Brain Development t-shirt

STUDY STAGES:

The study consists of 4 initial appointments followed by 1-year and 2-year follow-up appointments. Each year of participation includes the following appointments:

  • 2 of 4 Appointments: Neuropsychological testing
  • During two of four appointments, your child will undergo a series of neuropsychological assessments performed by Stanford assessors. The assessments include measures of IQ, reading, memory and math abilities. These appointments will last 2.5 hours each.
  • Participants are compensated $25 for completing each of these 2 neuropsychological appointments, for a total of $50.
  • 2 of 4 Appointments: MRI scan
  • During the other two of four appointments, participants will undergo a brain scan (MRI). During the scan, participants will play computer-based math and memory games while pictures of their brain are taken. An MRI scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that does not use x-rays or radiation. This appointment lasts 3 - 3.5 hours and participants are compensated $30 per scan.
  • Years 2 and 3 Follow-Ups:
  • Participants return to repeat appointments 1-3 one-year and two-years after their initial visit. Compensation is equal to that of the initial appointments, with a total of $330 possible over the 3-year period.
  • For full completion of the study, participants are compensated an additional $50, for a total of $380.
