How You Can Help
Private philanthropy is more important than ever in ensuring Stanford’s continued leadership in cancer research and patient care. Charitable gifts to the Stanford Cancer Institute provide critical resources to develop new therapies, prevention strategies and methods of early detection that reduce the occurrence and impact of cancer. Your support enables us to advance promising new research and treatment programs, train future generations of physicians and scientists, expand vital patient support services and share our knowledge with the community.
Cancer Discovery Fund
The Cancer Discovery Fund is an indispensable source of funds supporting every aspect of the SCI's mission. Your support enables our researchers and physicians to rapidly respond to new ideas and opportunities in the drive to understand and eliminate cancer.
Your gifts can designate a specific purpose – such as patient care, research, education or cancer prevention – and you may choose to support the work of a particular physician, researcher or clinical specialty area. Contact our development staff for the full range of available funding opportunities.
Gifts may be made in memory or in honor of a loved one or friend, or to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion. Tribute gifts are a thoughtful way to show your support for our cancer research and treatment programs, and we will inform your designate that a gift has been made in their honor.
Many companies match their employees' gifts to non-profit organizations. Contact your human resource department to see if your employer will match your donation. Matching gift forms are available to submit with your donation.
Endowed gifts create a legacy for the donor and provide an ongoing source of support for the SCI. Income from the endowment allows us to attract and retain the best faculty, and provides resources to sustain programs in research, patient care and treatment. Examples of endowment support include:
An endowed professorship is the highest honor Stanford can bestow on its faculty. It is awarded to physicians and scientists whose work represents the ideals of the University and distinguishes it as a leader in medicine.
Faculty Scholar Fund
An endowed faculty scholar fund honors, encourages and supports outstanding young faculty members early in their careers. Such awards last for three or four years – a period long enough to complete a segment of work, but short enough to make the fund available to other qualified candidates.
Tax benefits can be arealized from donations through your estate, gifts of retirement plan assets, real property or other complex assets, including some that can pay you income for life. Planned gifts can be carefully tailored to meet your needs, and some examples of common planned gifts include:
A gift through your will or trust is entirely free from federal estate taxes. You may make a bequest and retain the ability to change it at any time.
Life Income Gifts
Life income gifts are created when you transfer cash, securities, real estate or other assets to Stanford. The University invests those assets, and you or your beneficiary receives an income stream for life, after which the principal stays with Stanford.

Publicly Traded Securities and Other Assets
Gifts to SCI can be made with non-cash assets, such as real estate and publicly traded securities. Publicly traded securities can be used to make any type of charitable gift: lifetime outright gifts, life income gifts or bequests. In making such gifts, you receive a charitable income or estate tax deduction and may defer or avoid long-term capital gain taxes on those securities. Publicly traded securities held in a brokerage account may be transferred electronically to Stanford University.
