Students must be in good academic standing and, at the time of the elective clerkship, will be registered in their 4th or final year in an MD or DO degree program at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association.

Students must have completed core clinical clerkships in Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery.

Students Must Have Completed and Must Provide Proof of Required Immunizations and/or Tests for Medical Clearance:

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 

Measles and Mumps - 2 doses of live vaccines or laboratory evidence of immunity
Rubella -  1 dose of live vaccines or laboratory evidence of immunity

Varicella: 

2 doses of live vaccines or laboratory evidence of immunity

Hepatitis B:

3 doses of vaccine, or laboratory evidence of immunity from vaccination (Hepatitis Surface Antibody); or laboratory evidence of natural immunity (i.e., have had past hepatitis B infection). *This must include results for Hepatitis Surface Antibody, Hepatitis B Core Antibody and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen.

*Equivocal antibody titers are not considered sufficient to protect from infection.  Completed vaccine series must be administered as recommended by the CDC-ACIP.

Tdap (Tetanus+Diphtheria+Pertussis): 

Tdap booster (booster without Pertussis is not compliant), must be within past 10 years from the last day of the quarter

Flu Vaccine:

Required seasonally October thru March (evidence of flu shot for 2024-2025 season)

Tuberculin Test:

TB testing completed within 12 months prior to end of the clerkship, with laboratory evidence of negative QuantiFERON Gold or T-spot blood test.  PPD is not acceptable.

If history of a positive TB skin or blood test, a chest x-ray completed within 12 months of start of clerkship accompanied by positive TB test results.

Valid TB Test Dates for the 2024-25 Clerkship Year:

Summer Quarter 2024-25:

Period 1 last day: July 28, 2024 (test results must be after July 28, 2023)

Period 2 last day: August 25, 2024 (test results must be after August 25, 2023)

Period 3 last day: September 22, 2024 (test results must be after September 22, 2023)          

Autumn Quarter 2024-25:

Period 4 last day: October 20, 2024 (test results must be after October 20, 2023)

Period 5 last day: November 17, 2024 (test results must be after November 17, 2023)

Period 6 last day: December 15, 2024 (test results must be after December 15, 2023)  

Winter Quarter 2024-25:

Period 7 last day: February 2, 2025 (test results must be after February 2, 2024)

Period 8 last day: March 2, 2025 (test results must be after March 2, 2024)

Period 9 last day: March 30, 2025 (test results must be after March 30, 2024) 

Spring Quarter 2024-25:

Period 10 last day: April 27, 2025 (test results must be after April 27, 2024)

Period 11 last day: May 25, 2025 (test results must be after May 25, 2024)

Period 12 last day: June 22, 2025 (test results must be after June 22, 2024) 

Students must have passed and provide documentation of a Respiratory Mask Fit Test/Certification within 12 months prior to the end of the academic quarter. The test includes a measurement for mask size. 

• Stanford University Hospital and Clinics stock 3M 1860 or 1860S type N95 disposable respirators.
   

Valid Mask Fit Test Date for the 2024-25 Clerkship Year:

Summer Quarter 2024-25, no older than September 2023

Autumn Quarter 2024-25, no older than December 2023

Winter Quarter 2024-25, no older than March 2024

Spring Quarter 2024-25, no older than June 2024

Students must be covered by malpractice/liability insurance at a minimum level of $1,000,000 primary/$3,000,000 aggregate by the home school.  If the home school does not meet our minimum coverage, documentation of supplemental insurance will be required to fulfill our requirements. 

Students must be covered by personal health insurance during the time they will be participating in the elective clerkship.

Students must have completed the criminal background check within 2 years prior to the end of the clerkship. 

Any basic criminal background check is acceptable.  Students have used online services if their home institution does not assist in providing one.      

Bloodborne Pathogens Training:

Students must have completed the training within 12 months prior to the end date of their schedelued clerkship period.

Safety & Emergency Preparedness Training:

Students must have completed the training within 12 months prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship period.

•  It is acceptable if the home institution combines training in bloodborne pathogens and safety measures.  
• Training topics include: General Safety, IIPP, and Emergency Preparedness covers practices and procedures for preventing employee injury or illness from potential workplace hazards.  Appropriate for all employees and students in administrative and other work environments.
• Biosafety covers the safe use, handling, and disposal of biohazardous agents, and reviews emergency procedures for occupational injuries or biological material spills.
   

Basic Life Suport and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training:

Students must have completed the training(s) within 2 years prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship period.

The Stanford University Privacy Office requires visitors, including visiting students, to complete Stanford's HIPAA/Protecting Patient Privacy online training.  

After students create their SUNet ID and the account is active, an email notification will be sent to the students' Stanford email address with instructions on how to complete the training. 

Students must have passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination or the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners certifying exam.

If students who are participating in a clerkship that takes place at a Veterans Administration (VA) hospital site, will be required to comply with the following requirements set by the VA:

• Evidence or self-certification that they are physically and mentally fit to perform the essential functions of the training program
• Evidence or self-certification of up-to-date vaccinations for healthcare workers as recommended by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and VA
• Evidence of tuberculosis screening and testing per CDC health care personnel guidelines
• Identification documents to meet VA security requirements
• Results of screening against the Health and Human Services’ List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE)
• Trainees who were born male and who are US citizens, immigrants to the US, or are otherwise required by law to register, have registered with the Selective Service System
• Trainees who are non-US citizens:

Appropriate documents can be provided and could include permanent resident card, employment authorization document Form I-766, visas: J-1, J‑2, H-1B, H-4, E-3, or DS-2019

Have current immigrant, non-immigrant, exchange visitor or other documentation stating that they are eligible to live and work in the US

Have been issued a US social security number

Instructions for paying the fee will be provided after students accept the scheduled elective clerkship.  

The non-refundable application fee of $200 must be received to complete the application.
