Post Decision Requirements

Health insurance coverage is a requirement for participating in Stanford clerkships. The expectation is that students are arriving at Stanford under the cover of a health insurance plan, such as one provided by their home institution. 

Visiting medical student are not eligible for Stanford's student health insurance plan. Thus, students should provide proof of their health insurance coverage including the name of the plan, policy or member number, and plan expiration date.  

Students must be covered by malpractice/liability insurance at a minimum level of $1,000,000 primary/$3,000,000 aggregate by the home school. If the home school does not meet our minimum coverage, documentation of supplemental insurance will be required to fulfill our requirements. 

Students must have completed and must provide proof of required immunizations and/or tests for medical clearance. Instructions will be provided for submitting vaccination/immunization details and TB testing for medical clearance. 

Students must have completed the criminal background check within 2 years prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship period. 

Any basic criminal background check is acceptable. Students have used online services if their home institution does not assist in providing one.   

Students must have passed and provide documentation of a Respiratory Mask Fit Test/Certification within 12 months prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship rotation period. The test includes a measurement for mask size. Stanford University Hospital and Clinics stock 3M 1860 or 1860S type N95 disposable respirators.

1. Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Students must have completed the training within 12 months prior to the end date of their schedelued clerkship period.

2. Safety & Emergency Preparedness Training: Students must have completed the training within 12 months prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship period.

• It is acceptable if the home institution combines training in bloodborne pathogens and safety measures.  
• Training topics include: General Safety, IIPP, and Emergency Preparedness covers practices and procedures for preventing employee injury or illness from potential workplace hazards.  Appropriate for all employees and students in administrative and other work environments.
• Biosafety covers the safe use, handling, and disposal of biohazardous agents, and reviews emergency procedures for occupational injuries or biological material spills.
  
  

3. Basic Life Support and / or Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training: Students must have completed the training(s) within 2 years prior to the end date of their scheduled clerkship period.

Please review Stanford’s HIPAA Security and Privacy Policies. Visiting students are required to complete the Stanford HIPAA/Protecting Patient Privacy training. Instructions regarding completing the training will be sent to the students' Stanford email address.  

Per Stanford University policy, visiting medical students are not granted remote access to patient data. 

The SUNet (Stanford University Network) ID is a unique account name that identifies students as a member of the Stanford community.

To set up the SUNet ID, students will need their Stanford University ID number (the eight digit number included in the acceptance notification; do not use the leading “VS”). Students should follow the instructions in their acceptance notification to set up their SUNet ID, which also establishes their Stanford email account. 

Students will need a SUNet ID in order to:

• Access their Stanford email account (e.g. SUNetID@stanford.edu) to receive on-boarding and clerkship information from various Stanford contacts
• Access the wireless network
• Pay Stanford bill (if applicable)

Note: Once the SUNet ID is created, it may take up to 24-48 hours for it to become fully activated. Therefore, students may not have immediate access to their Stanford email. 

Students will be required to carry a Stanford Medicine photo ID if their clerkship takes place at the Stanford Hospital and/or Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Instructions for sending the photo (i.e., headshot), which will be used to create a Stanford Medicine ID badge, will be included in the VSLO requirements.  

Due to the volume of badges that are requested from our school and Stanford Health Care, the security office needs to create your badge in advance of your arrival to reduce non-critical traffic at their location. Students will pick up their badge based on instructions received from the Office of Medical Student Affairs/Registrar's Office.

Instructions for paying the fee will be provided after students accept the scheduled elective clerkship. The non-refundable application fee of $200 must be received to complete the application.
