Please note the SUNet ID you created when accepting participation in the elective clerkship. It also established your Stanford University email account, e.g. jane09@stanford.edu. You will be receiving email messages sent to your Stanford email address to prepare for your participation in the clerkship. Please check your Stanford email frequently to ensure important information is not missed.

You will need your SUNet ID or Stanford email address in order to:

• Access the wireless network while on campus
• Take the weekly Color Genomics COVID-19 test

Once your SUNet ID is created, email notifications will start being sent to your Stanford email address. One of the notices will provide instructions for completing Stanford's HIPAA/Protecting Patient Privacy online training.

The Stanford University Privacy Office requires visitors to complete the training.

Print and keep the information below with your Photo ID Badge. In the event you are exposed to bloodborne pathogens and/or needle sticks while you are working within the hospital, these are the protocol phone numbers and exposure information.

If you are stuck by a needle or splashed with bloody fluid follow the 1-STIX (1-7849) protocol.

1. If sharps injury: Wash skin with soap/water x 15 minutes If eyes: Flush with 500cc lactated Ringers or normal saline; If mouth/ nose: Flush with water x 15 minutes
2. Activate 1-STIX Pager for OHS BBP Advice RN (24/7/365)

3. Obtain Source Patient's Blood by cooperating with site hospital personnel:
   1. Name/MRN/Unit Location/ HIV, HBV, HCV status
   2. Follow-up services may be advised by OHS BBP RN for testing at University Services at 484 Oak Rd (650) 735-5308 or in the basement of 300P.

Should a student experience a needle stick, they are advised to call the Needlestick Hotline regardless of where the incident occurs. If immediate emergency medical treatment is deemed necessary (sutures, x-ray, etc.), the hotline practitioner will work cooperatively with affiliated hospital to arrange this. If post-exposure prophylactic medication is necessary, the hotline practitioner will phone in a prescription to a pharmacy convenient for the student to expedite medication administration. The hotline practitioner and student will work with the hospital personnel to attain source patient blood for testing.

If students experience or witness mistreatment while they are rotating at Stanford clinical sites, we encourage them to report it through one of the options below.

1.  Contact the Office of Medical Student Wellness (OMSW) directly by email. Only the OMSW members of the office will see this report. They will de-identify information about persons reported and present to the monthly Respectful Environment and Mistreatment Committee for review and action.

2.  Report incidents in Qualtrics. Students can report at the time of the incident and not wait for the end-of-course evaluations. OMSW receives the report. Egregious incidents are handled immediately. To report an incident directly in Qualtrics.

3.  Complete a SAFE report through the hospital SAFE reporting system. Reports referencing student mistreatment are sent directly to OMSW. They are kept confidential and addressed quickly.

4.  Report incidents to course directors and/or the Assistant Dean for Clerkship Education.

Please review Stanford University policies which address sexual harassment, prohibited sexual conduct, Title IX, and consensual romantic or sexual relationships at Stanford.

For clerkships that take place in SHC and/or LPCH, email will be sent to your Stanford email address from the Office of Medical Student Affairs (OMSA) prior to the clerkship start date included in your acceptance notification. The email will explain the process for receiving your login information to access the EPIC system for patient records in SHC and/or LPCH only. 

Per Stanford University policy, visiting medical students are not granted remote access to patient data. You will complete the process for gaining access to the EPIC system when you are physically located at SHC or LPCH and connected to the hospital's network.

Clerkship coordinators will send information regarding other clerkship site access as needed.

You will receive instructions for completing scrub training if applicable. If so, you’ll complete Scrub and Sterile Procedure Training and complete a knowledge and skills assessment. This involves watching a mandatory training video and completing a test before you arrive on campus. If you have undergone scrub training at your home institution, you’ll still be required to view the video and take the knowledge test. A scrub training attestation form will be provided. If you have not been scrub trained, you will be required to complete scrub training at Stanford on the first day of your clerkship.

If you will be participating in a rotation that takes place at a Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital site, the School of Medicine Registrar's Office might be in contact 3 to 4 weeks prior to the start date to collect required documents. 

Male students will be asked to provide their selective service registration card. U.S. permanent residents and non-U.S. citizens will be asked to provide copies of their citizenship and visa documents.
