What Do I Do After Asking? | Other Psychotherapies

Residential Treatment Centers also known as “RTCs”

These are live in health care facilities and the highest level of care for youth with substance use. Residential treatment is typically for youth who have failed treatment at the outpatient and IOP level.

Most residential treatment stays are for 30-60 days.

Wilderness Therapy

These programs combine experiential treatment with individual and group therapy in an outdoor/adventure setting. Wilderness therapy is often the next level of care if outpatient care, IOPs and RTCs have failed.

Wilderness programs have controversy and some experts do not believe these programs have been appropriately studied. Nonetheless, they are a common level of treatment.

Therapeutic Boarding Schools

Combine therapy with academics in a boarding school environment.

Youth typically have to have spent time at a Wilderness Program (see above) before acceptance into a Therapeutic Boarding School.
