How do I ask? | Prepare

What do I need to deal with up front before even before doing anything else?

•   Discuss conditional confidentiality with both parent and patient up front

“Before we start, I just want to let you both know that what we talk about separately will be confidential. What that means is that I will not share what we talk about one-on-one unless there is an urgent safety risk. This is the law for teens in our state, but it is also the best way to make sure we’re making the best decisions for your child’s health… decisions that are based in honesty, the truth, and what is best for his/her health. Does that make sense? Do you have any questions about that?”
