Learn about the history of tobacco messaging and marketing tactics.
Explore how the e-cigarettes/vape pen industry follows in these footsteps.
Identify predatory marketing strategies employed by tobacco and e-cigarettes/vape pen industry.

Instructions

Teachers should go through each unit and download the PowerPoint for class presentation. Teachers should also download the accompanying activities for in-class activities. Speakers' notes are embedded in the PowerPoint. Activities are meant to be printed for students before class begins. Each Unit has a Kahoot! Quiz linked below and can be used a pre and post quiz to see how much students know before and after instruction. Discussion Guides found below can be assigned as take-home assignments.

Purpose

This activity provides a script that teachers can use to initiate discussions about the history of tobacco, the tobacco industry, and tobacco control. Embedded within the scripted discussion are various ads or videos that could be shown to further make the points.

Preparation

Procedure

This PowerPoint provides an overview of what students should know about e-cigarettes/vapes, including why youth find them appealing, marketing tactics being used, what we know about the health effects of e-cigs, and so on. At the end of the PowerPoint are some debriefing activities that you can use with the students.

Purpose

This activity will allow students to discuss information they have heard or learned about e-cigarettes/vapes and list any questions they have about them. This will give the educator a sense of what students already know and would like to know and students will be able to track what they learn as the class moves through activites.

Preparation

Materials Needed: Computer, Internet Access, Projector, Large Sheets of Paper and Markers or Printed out Unit 1: Activity 2. Brainstorm Worksheets

Procedure

Brainstorming (15 minutes): Using the handout “Activity 2. Brainstorm”, ask students to list what they know or have heard about e-cigs/vapes. Then, ask students to list questions they have about e-cigs/vapes. As you go through the following activities, have students track which statements listed are true or false. Have students answer the questions they listed once the information is covered in the activities. The handout can be filled out by students individually or projected and filled out together as a class. Any statements or questions not covered in the following activities can be researched and answered by students as a homework assignment.

Teaching Note: This brainstorming activity can be done with small groups if time allows or as a whole class to save time.

Unit 1 Activity 2 - E-Cigarette and Pod-Based 101 Presentation

Purpose

This activity will provide information on what e-cigs/vapes are and include some of the potential risks of using e-cigarettes/vape pens. Students will then be quizzes on the information presented.

Preparation

Materials Needed: Computer, Internet Access or previously downloaded E-cigarettes/Vape pens 101 Powerpoint, Projector

Procedure

Present the introductory PowerPoint (40 Minutes); NOTE: cutting or removing slides is an easy way to allow for more student questions and discussion

Discussion of the PowerPoint (10 Minutes)

Based on the slideshow, which statements on the Unit 1: Activity 2. Brainstorm Worksheets were found to be true and which questions were found to be false?
Which questions were answered and how?
Which questions do you still have?

This activity is a Kahoot quiz, along with instructions, that you can use with your students to gain their understanding of the material presented. You can give this quiz using the Kahoot.it web interface, making the quiz a fun contest between the students, or just the old-fashioned way of handing out a quiz.

If internet connection is not accessible to you, download the paper version of the quiz below. Be sure to hand out the "Quiz" version to students and not the "Answer Key" version.

Kahoot (15 minutes)

Go to https://getkahoot.com/ and log-in to your account. Don’t have an account? Click on the “Sign up for free!” button at the top of the page, and follow the instructions.
Go to http://tinyurl.com/Intro-toE-Cigs-VapesQuiz This is a public quiz.
Press the “Classic” (individual players) or “Team Mode” button. Your screen will display the instructions for how to join (kahoot.it) and Game PIN.
Ask students to get their devices ready. They can use any device with a web browser -- phone, tablet or laptop. Students don’t need an account to join.
Project your screen. At this point you should have your device (laptop or tablet) connected to the projector or screen for your students to see. Your screen will display the game pin and instructions for how to join. Students will visit kahoot.it and they will be prompted to enter the game pin, followed by a nickname. Their nickname will appear on the screen at the front as they join the game.
Once everyone has joined the game, click the ‘Start’ button on the right. The game will then load with an “Are you ready?” message. The first question will then be projected.
Click the ‘Next’ button to move through the game. Only the question will be projected at first, then the answer options will appear and the timer counts down. On the student’s devices, they will see answer buttons that correspond to the answers displayed on the projected screen. Each option is differentiated by a color/shape. The question finishes when everyone has answered or the time has run out. Then the correct answer and results are automatically displayed. The faster students answer correctly, the more points they get. The top 5 players are displayed on the projected screen in between each question.
Once you get to the final question, press the purple ‘End’ button to display the winner! The winner’s nickname is displayed on the projected screen.

Kahoot! Tips

Nicknames: Set rules for your students when selecting nicknames. If they join with an inappropriate nickname, you can remove them from the game.
Discussion: While playing Kahoot, you’re students may become louder than normal, but this is a good thing - they’ll be talking about the content you’re teaching - encourage it! Because you click ‘Next’ to move through the game, you can pause at any time to discuss a question and answer in more detail.
Devices and Access: Remind students that they may miss questions if their device goes to sleep. If this happens, Kahoot! will automatically allow them to jump back in on the next question. If your students temporarily drop out of a game due to a slow network, Kahoot! will automatically try to get them back in on the next question.
Sound: Turn the volume up for questions - it adds to the excitement!
