Why Choose Stanford?

Michael Pohlen, MD

Stanford’s thoracic imaging fellowship was that rare mix of intellectual rigor and genuine camaraderie, and I would enthusiastically recommend it. The attendings are approachable, supportive, relatable, and eager to teach, creating an environment that pushes you to improve without ego or hierarchy or any feeling of exploitation. Each day brought exposure to complex tertiary-care cases while still feeling like part of a tight, respectful team. Living in the Bay Area added balance—some of the world’s best food, nature, and culture all within a short train or car ride. This fellowship year was one of those experiences that I’d choose again in a heartbeat.
I chose Stanford for my cardiothoracic fellowship for many reasons. I wanted to learn from distinguished experts in the field of thoracic and cardiovascular imaging, which set me up well for a career in academic radiology. Once there, I was impressed with the complexity of patients and their imaging, which complimented what I had learned in residency. Finally, I relished my time living in the Bay Area where there is so much to do and eat and the weather is great all year.

Training at Stanford was a unique and enriching experience for me and my family. In the hospital, I met some of the brightest and most determined minds. I had the opportunity to work and learn alongside leading experts in thoracic and cardiovascular imaging. By collaborating with this diverse group, I found my footing and shaped the future of my practice.

Outside the hospital, the Palo Alto area offered an unrivaled culture, rich in intelligence, technology, food, and diversity. My family and I made friends and experiences that are only possible here.
I chose Stanford because it provided comprehensive training in both thoracic and cardiovascular imaging at a top academic institution.  With separate sections for chest and CVI, all the faculty are very subspecialized and experts in their field.  Faculty and staff were welcoming and approachable, and I made lasting professional connections

“I chose Stanford for many reasons, but what stood out most to me were the people and the education. Everyone I met at Stanford was incredibly kind, collaborative, and genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. During my training, I was consistently impressed by how approachable and supportive the faculty and fellows were- it truly feels like a team.

The educational experience is outstanding. The Chest and Cardiovascular Imaging attendings take the time to review every case at the workstation, which makes the learning process both engaging and in-depth. There are also abundant research opportunities, and they get you involved right from the start, even providing a dedicated academic day each week to focus on projects. Combined with access to cutting-edge technology and world-class facilities, it’s an amazing environment to grow both clinically and academically.

Outside of work, the Bay Area is an incredible place to live and train. The weather is perfect year-round, and there’s always something to do, from taking a quick train ride to San Francisco to spending a weekend by the coast in Monterey. Overall, Stanford offers the perfect mix of great people, exceptional training, and an unbeatable location. I honestly wouldn’t choose anywhere else to train.”
