Steinberg lab member receives American Heart Association grant
Steinberg and Hansen
Congratulations to Hansen Chen, PhD, an Instructor in the Steinberg Lab, for receiving the prestigious Career Development Award from the American Heart Association.
This award recognizes early-career investigators at the outset of their professional academic appointments in the medical and research fields.
With this grant, Dr. Chen will focus on his project titled “Rapid Effects of Hyperglycemia on Blood-Brain Barrier Damage and Complement Activation in Stroke”.
This project focuses on hyperglycemic stroke, which affects over 40% of stroke patients and is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. Their studies have revealed that hyperglycemia triggers adverse effects early in stroke, notably causing rapid damage to the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
This research aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps about the early effects of hyperglycemic stroke on BBB integrity and complement immune response, considering potential sex differences. The outcomes will offer valuable insights for drug development in stroke treatment and further my career as an independent scientist in immune-brain interactions and translational stroke research.
