Embolic stroke and hypoxic brain injury remain devastating perioperative complications with limited treatment options. Mitochondria are central to normal cellular functioning, and regulate the cellular response to injury. Our laboratory is focused on developing novel gene therapy approaches to target pathways that regulate mitochondrial function to minimize injury and improve clinical outcome following ischemic/hypoxic brain injury.
