DICOM/Imaging Download - Step by Step Instructions

Self-service DICOM Image requests are limited to 10 accession numbers. For larger downloads, consult the Research Technology Data Services (formerly RIC) team.

Following are the step by step instructions on downloading DICOM/Imaging data.

Step #1

Stanford's Full Traffic VPN is required to access the data delivery tool.

https://domlaunchpad.stanford.edu/support#vpn has information about the Stanford VPN.

Sign in with your Stanford University Google account. Depending on your browser, you may need to use separate browser profiles to manage multiple Google logins.

Step #2

Upload the list of accession numbers in a list.

Note: Accession number may be specified as “specimen ID”  - it may  be listed only under “Collection Information” for outside scans.

Step #3

Confirm the accession numbers by clicking “View Details”.  This step is for the researchers to confirm that the dicom image they are requesting are correct.  This is optional step.

You can click "Save and Create Extract" - which will save the list and launch the create extract screen.

Step #4

Create Extract for the above list

Step #5

Launch the background job to extract DICOMs. Clicking “Save & Run” in above will launch the popup to get notification.  Once the job is completed user will be notified

Step #6

“In Progress” indicates the DICOM extraction Job is running in the background.

Step #7

Once the job is completed (email notification), you can see the status changed to “Ready for Download”.  Click the Download icon in the Actions to bring the following section right below the extract.

“Summary/Codebook.csv” file contains the codebook/translation of de-identified accession numbers (filename) with real accession numbers.   “Json” files right now contain metadata about the dicom files like how many images got filtered, scrubbed, sizes etc.  "Filtered" in the Dicom Status indicates that the system is not able to PHI Scrub those images and hence not included in the download.

Step #8

Downloading DICOM images (zip files).

Clicking the download icon for each file will show the following popup to confirm the use of these DICOMs.
