Properly acknowledging Stanford CTSA grant support requires the inclusion of NIH-required citation language and compliance with NIH Public Access Policy Requirements. Instructions for public access compliance are included here as well.

NIH-Required Citation Language

A. Stanford CTSA resources, services, or pilot grants (Current Award # UM1TR004921)

Projects funded by Stanford CTSA or that use its resources or services are required to acknowledge the grant in publications, patents, and grant applications. This includes projects that use the Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU), pilot funding, biostatisticians, informatics support, and other consultation services.

1. Projects that received CTSA funding should acknowledge the respective grants based on the funding period:

  • July 2024 – June 2031: UM1TR004921
  • July 2019 – June 2024: UL1TR003142
  • September 2013 – April 2019: UL1TR001085
  • May 2012 – October 2013: UL1TR000093
  • 2008 – April 2012: UL1RR0257441

 

2. For manuscript submissions, use this paragraph in the acknowledgement section:

“Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number UM1TR004921. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health.”

 

3. Required language on a patent application and any patent issued for an invention arising from CTSA funded activities:

"This invention was made with Government support under Award Number UM1TR004921 awarded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. The Government has certain rights in the invention."

 

B. K12 Scholars (Current Award: K12TR004930)

1. Scholars who received CTSA KL2/K12 funding should acknowledge the respective grants based on the funding period:

  • September 2024 – August 2029: K12TR004930
  • January 2019 – July 2024: KL2TR003143

 

2. For manuscript submissions from CTSA KL2/K12 scholars, use this paragraph:

“Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number K12TR004930. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health.”

 

3. Required language on a patent application and any patent issued for an invention arising from KL2/K12 funded activities:

"This invention was made with Government support under Award Number K12TR004930 awarded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. The Government has certain rights in the invention."

NIH Public Access Policy Requirements

All peer-reviewed publications resulting from the use of Stanford CTSA resources or services must be compliant with the NIH Public Access Policy. This policy requires that researchers submit the final peer-reviewed manuscripts that have been supported by NIH funds to NIHMS immediately upon acceptance for publication so the manuscript will be available in PubMed Central for all to read or download.

When an investigator publishes a peer-reviewed paper acknowledging NIH support, the following steps are required:

  1. Add the paper’s citation to the investigator’s bibliography in My NCBI.
  2. Add the CTSA grant number to supported papers listed in My NCBI.
  3. Ensure the paper has been issued a PMCID within 3 months of publication.

The full article will not be available in PubMed until after the journal embargo period (up to 12 months), but assignment of a PMCID is not dependent on the embargo.

Instructions for Public Access Compliance

  1. Login to My NCBI.
  2. Go to My Bibliography.
  3. Add publication to My Bibliography page by clicking +Add citations > From PubMed.
  4. Search with the PMID number or author name, then click Add to My Bibliography.
  5. Add NIH award number in the Public Access Compliance box. The box will show the non-compliance status unless the submission was started by the journal (will have a NIHMS number).
  6. Edit status in Public Access Compliance box based on NIH funding, peer-review, direct journal submissions to PMC, and exemptions (e.g., non-peer reviewed).
  7. For peer-reviewed publications with NIH funding that the journal has not submitted to PMC, click Begin submission in the NIHMS.
  8. Follow the step-by-step instructions in NIHMS. You will need the last author-submitted Word document (accepted version), not the journal's formatted PDF.

supports the deposit of manuscripts into PubMed Central (PMC) as required by the public access policies of the NIH and other participating funders.

NIH Public Access Policy

requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to PubMed Central immediately upon acceptance for publication.
