Lloyd Minor, MD - Dean, Stanford School of Medicine

Lloyd B. Minor, MD, is the Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine. With his leadership, Stanford Medicine has established a strategic vision to lead the biomedical revolution in Precision Health, a fundamental shift to more proactive and personalized health care that empowers people to lead healthy lives. His book, “Discovering Precision Health,” published in 2020, highlights how biomedical advances are dramatically improving our ability to treat and cure complex diseases. Dr. Minor also is a professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and a professor of Bioengineering and of Neurobiology, by courtesy, at Stanford University. With more than 160 published articles and chapters, Dr. Minor is an expert in balance and inner ear disorders. In 2012, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

David Entwistle - President and CEO, Stanford Health Care

David Entwistle is president and CEO of Stanford Health Care (SHC). He joined SHC in July 2016 with extensive executive experience at leading academic medical centers. Entwistle is a passionate advocate of precision health – tailoring a treatment to a patient’s specific disease or condition as well as focusing on prevention to empower patients to take charge of their health before they become ill.

Among the factors that attracted him to SHC are the unparalleled technologies available in Silicon Valley that help advance health care through better application of technology for individuals. According to Entwistle, SHC is extremely well-situated to be able to apply innovative technology, such as wearable devices that track activity or monitor blood glucose levels, to improve health.

Before joining SHC, he served for nine years as CEO of the University of Utah Hospital & Clinics (UUHC), the only academic medical center in the Intermountain West region. While serving at UUHC, Entwistle received the Modern Healthcare “Up and Comers Award,” for significant contributions in health care administration, management or policy.

He previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wis., from 2002-2007; and as vice president of professional services and joint venture operations at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, Calif.

As a recognized health care thought leader, Entwistle serves on the boards of the American Hospital Association, the AAMC Council of Teaching Hospitals, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and Vizient. He is the past chair of the Utah Hospital Association and was appointed by the governor of Utah to the state’s Medicaid Task Force.

Entwistle is an avid cyclist who enjoys both road and mountain biking, often accompanied by his teenage son. He also competes in Ironman Triathlons.

Paul A. King - President and CEO, Stanford Children's Health

Paul A. King joined Stanford Children’s Health in January 2019 bringing with him a distinguished career of more than 30 years as a health care executive, including leadership positions at several nationally recognized academic medical centers.

Prior to joining Stanford Children’s Health King led the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital as Executive Director. During his tenure, his strong leadership skills guided the strategic growth of the University of Michigan’s children’s and women’s programs and services. Prior to joining C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, King served as president and CEO for the Pediatric Management Group, a 550-physician academic pediatric subspecialty group practice affiliated with Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). His strong leadership record also includes senior management roles at the Mayo Clinic and the Samaritan Physicians Center.

As Stanford Children’s Health plans for continued growth and the expansion of innovation across the entire continuum of care, King’s distinguished record of accomplishment and dedication to the critically important role of pediatric and obstetric care will undoubtedly help Stanford Medicine achieve its Precision Health vision.

King is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Hospital Association and holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Nebraska, at Lincoln; and a master's degree in Health care Administration from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. King also is a Certified Medical Practice Executive.

Peter Poullos, MD - Clinical Associate Professor, Radiology and Founder, SMAC

Dr. Poullos is a native of Stockton California. He attended Santa Clara University where he earned his BS in Biology. He received his M.D. degree at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, after which he did Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-San Francisco, finishing in 2002. He stayed at UCSF as a Gastroenterology fellow until 2004. However, after a spinal cord injury, he decided to retrain in Radiology. He did his Radiology residency at Stanford University, where he also completed a fellowship In Body Imaging in 2009. Dr. Poullos is now faculty in both the departments of Radiology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His clinical practice is at the Stanford University Medical Center, where he interprets CT, MRI, and ultrasound primarily of the abdomen and pelvis. His interests include radiology of the acute abdomen, hepatobiliary imaging, and colorectal cancer screening.

Dr. Poullos is Founder and Executive Director of the Stanford Medicine Abilities Coalition (SMAC), a group composed of people with disabilities and their allies at Stanford Medicine. He is also a member of the Radiology Department Diversity Committee, the School of Medicine Faculty Senate Subcommittee on Diversity, and the School of Medicine Diversity Cabinet.

Zainub Dhanani, BA - Medical Student and Founder and Director, MSDCI National

Zainub Dhanani, BA is a current third year medical student and MS Health Policy student at Stanford School of Medicine. She is the founder of Stanford's Conference on Disability in Medicine and Healthcare and an active member of Stanford Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness. She is also the founder and director of the national advocacy organization, Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness. Her current research is focused on disability in medical education, race-related healthcare experiences, and the use of digital and telehealth interventions in improving access to care for vulnerable populations.

Mary J. Goodwin-Oquendo, Esq. - Attorney and Adjunct Professor of Law

Mary J. Goodwin-Oquendo is a disability civil rights attorney at Jo Anne Simon, P.C. and an adjunct professor of law at Fordham University School of Law. In her practice she advocates for individuals with disabilities who have experienced discrimination in school or the workplace and/or require accommodations on high stakes examinations (including the MCAT, USMLE, COMLEX, and various specialty boards). Mary is a member of the New York State Bar Association, and an appointed member of the organization’s Committee on Disability Rights. She has developed continuing legal education (CLE) coursework and has a special interest in publications. She is also a member of the Disability Rights Bar Association (DRBA), the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), and has served on the executive board of the New York Urban League Young Professionals and the National Urban League Young Professionals Programs Committee.

Michael Argenyi, MD, MPH, MSW, AAHIVS - Addiction Medicine Fellow

Michael Argenyi is a board certified Preventive Medicine physician and AAHIV specialist, with unique expertise in HIV and STI prevention and treatment, including harm reduction. He is currently in a two-year combined clinical and research Addiction Medicine fellowship at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. He previously completed his MD at Creighton University and his MSW and MPH at Boston University. As a physician with hearing loss, Dr. Argenyi has authored and co-authored articles advocating for disability inclusion in medicine. His past lawsuit, Argenyi v Creighton, is also a landmark disability law case taught in law schools across the country. In his spare time, he reminisces about New England fall hikes with his dog, Bruins hockey, and the ever-growing list of books he'll never finish reading.

Justin Bullock, MD, MPH - Resident, Internal Medicine

Justin Bullock is a second-year resident in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Originally from Detroit, Michigan, he completed his undergraduate studies in Chemical-Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and medical school at UCSF. Justin is passionate about medical education and his research interests include equity, assessment and the learning environment. He has a deep personal interest in narrative medicine, particularly in how healthcare providers can use our own narratives as physician-patients to create change in the medical community.

Walker Keenan, MD - PGY-3 Psychiatry Resident

Growing up as a queer Black kid with a learning disability and depression was challenging. I was born in Quincy, MA 29 years ago and lived with my Black mom, white dad, and two siblings. My 32-year-old sister, Alexandra, is biologically related to me and my Latinx brother, Xavier, age 23 was adopted into our family a few weeks after birth. Being raised in my family with my set of identities led me to choose to live a life in service of others.

As a kid teachers would say I was not “honor roll material” and I often questioned my own identity after white peers said that my correct grammar and choice in clothes meant I couldn’t possibly be Black. I would set goals for myself I knew I could achieve and I would be told that they aren’t possible. I questioned if there was something wrong with me as a Black boy who liked boys. Grappling with these hurdles and negative thoughts caused me to suffer from depression for years. Overcoming these challenges as a child gave me tenacity. This was reinforced by my mother, a three-time cancer survivor, who always says, “bring it on.” To her, this motto meant addressing challenges head-on and never giving up. Most importantly, she instilled in me compassion and empathy for others.

My village of family and friends has helped me grow and succeed and continues to support me to this day. Because of them and many that have broken barriers ahead of me, I graduated college at William & Mary, earned a medical degree at UCSF, and am now training to be a psychiatrist at Yale. I owe an enormous debt to this village and it is why with joy and a sense of obligation that I have committed myself to create a more equitable future for people who are like me. I want to be a part of this village for children and adolescents with psychiatric problems. As a child psychiatrist, I will work with children and their loved ones and be hopeful for them and with them despite systemic oppression, multiple setbacks, and refractory illness, and in doing so will help them get better.

Diana Cejas, MD, MPH - Assistant Professor of Neurology

Diana Cejas, MD, MPH is a pediatric neurologist and writer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She obtained her MD at Howard University and a MPH in Maternal and Child Health at the George Washington University prior to completing general pediatrics training in the Tulane – Oschner Pediatric Residency Program and pediatric neurology training at the University of Chicago. After her training was complete, she returned to her home state to practice medicine, to spend time with her family, and to write.

Dr. Cejas is faculty of the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. Through her clinical work, she cares for children and young adults with a broad spectrum of developmental disabilities with complex neurological and psychiatric comorbidities. She seeks to improve health outcomes in this population as they transition to adulthood and serves as Principal Investigator of several studies that explore their unique experiences.

After experiencing a critical illness during her residency training, Dr. Cejas has devoted much of her career to improving communication between healthcare providers and the disability community, particularly young disabled patients of color. She speaks on patient advocacy in various venues. She shares her own story and other commentary on disability and health topics via essays, Op-Eds, and other works of creative nonfiction. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in medical journals including The Journal of the American Medical Association and Neurology, literary magazines including The Iowa Review, Catapult, and Passages North, among others. She is currently working on a collection of essays that describe her life as both physician and patient.

Payam Massaband, MD - Clinical Associate Professor

Payam Massaband, M.D., is the Chief of Radiology at VAPAHCS. He completed his radiology residency, as well as cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fellowship training, at Stanford University School of Medicine. As Radiology Service Chief and Stanford Radiology Residency Program Director, his areas of emphasis are clinical excellence, quality assurance, process improvement, and residency education.

Dorothy W. Tolchin, MD, EdM - Instructor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Dorothy W. Tolchin, MD, EdM is an Instructor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) part-time at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Director of Medical Student Education for the HMS Department of PM&R. She oversees the disability curriculum thread at HMS and is the faculty advisor for the HMS Disabilities in Medicine and Dentistry Working Group, which focuses on disability education as well as career development for emerging leaders in clinical care for people with disabilities. Dr. Tolchin is also the faculty advisor for the student identity group HACHD (HMS Allies in Chronic illness, Health conditions, and Disabilities). Dr. Tolchin’s teaching and medical education research center around optimizing accessible, equitable healthcare for people with disabilities of all types. 

Dr. Tolchin received an AB summa cum laude in psychology/biology from Harvard College, EdM in disability policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and MD from Harvard Medical School. Following residency/chief residency in PM&R at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital/HMS, she completed fellowship training in neuromuscular disease and electromyography (Partners Neurology/HMS) and in hospice and palliative medicine (NY Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center). Dr. Tolchin cherishes every aspect of her work and is energized by the growing attention to disability in medicine.

Lisa Meeks, PhD, MA - Assistant Professor of Family Medicine

Dr. Meeks is an expert in disabilities in medical education. As an administrative leader and researcher, she is helping to inform policy and best practice in the area of disability inclusion for medical education, training and practice. Her research interests include: Improving access to medical education for learners with disabilities, medical student and resident well-being, reducing health care disparities in patients with disabilities, and the performance and trajectory of learners and physicians with disabilities. Her work has been published in the NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, and Academic Medicine and featured on NPR, in the Washington Post, CNBC, Bloomberg Law, and AAMC News.

Dr. Meeks is the co-founder and Past President of the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education, co-developer of both the AAMC Disability Webinar Series and edited and authored the leading books on the topic, including Disability as Diversity, the casebook companion, and Equal Access for Students with Disabilities: The Guide for Health Science and Professional Education, Second Edition. She is also the lead author of the AAMC Special Report: Accessibility, Inclusion, and Action in Medical Education: Lived Experiences of Learners and Physicians with Disabilities, co-creator of the social media campaign #DocsWithDisabilities, host of the Docs With Disabilities Podcast, and key facilitator of the Equal Access Book Club.

Bonnie Swenor, PhD, MPH - Associate Professor at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and Director of The Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center

Dr. Swenor is an epidemiologist and Associate Professor at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and the Epidemiology Department at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center, which aims to address health inequities for people with disabilities and shift the paradigm from ‘living with a disability’ to ‘thriving with a disability’. Dr. Swenor’s career is motivated by her personal experience with visual impairment, and her research focuses on establishing evidence, developing strategies, and shaping policy to maximize health, inclusion, and equity for people with disabilities.

Cori Poffenberger, MD, FACEP - Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine

Dr. Cori Poffenberger is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Faculty Development and Wellness for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford. Her professional interests are focused on physician wellness and diversity and inclusion, specifically related to disability. Her work focuses on medical student and physician education on how to provide more effective, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care to individuals with disabilities. In 2019 she was awarded the Rathmann Family Foundation Fellowship in Patient-Centered Care at the Stanford School of Medicine to support her work on developing comprehensive, competency-based education around disability for medical students. She also lectures nationally to physicians in Emergency Medicine on this topic.

Richie Sapp, MS, MD Candidate 2021 - Medical Student

Richard Sapp is a medical student at Stanford School of Medicine. He has been involved in leadership in many disability advocacy groups at Stanford including Kids With Dreams, Stanford Disability Initiative, Stanford Disability Coalition, Medical Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses and Stanford Medicine Abilities Coalition. He has implemented multiple courses on disability education at Stanford including "Diverse Perspectives on Disabilities" and "Caring for Individuals wtih Disabilities" and has performed research in curriculum evaluation. He is a passionate about medical education, social determinants of health, design thinking with plans for advocacy for individuals with disabilities throughout his medical career.

Michael Kim, MD - Assistant Dean for Student Affairs

Dr. Michael Kim obtained his M.D. and specialty training in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. After completing his Pediatric Chief Residency, he joined the faculty as the University’s first full-time Med-Peds hospitalist. From 2013 through 2015 he was the Medical Director for Informatics at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) assisting in development, rollout, and improvement of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). He became the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in 2015 while continuing to practice hospitalist medicine on the Internal Medicine wards. In his role in Student Affairs, he advocates for and promotes student academic success, a culture of wellbeing, and a supportive learning environment. His current areas of research include the academic progress of medical students with disabilities and supporting the mental health needs of medical students.

Neera Jain, PhD, MS, CRC - Postdoctoral Fellow

Neera is a scholar of disability studies in education, a rehabilitation counselor, and a passionate advocate for disability inclusion in health science education based in Aotearoa New Zealand. Weaving together perspectives of students with disabilities and school officials, her recent dissertation, Negotiating the capability imperative: Enacting disability inclusion in medical education, explores the limits of an accommodation-focused approach to disability inclusion and imagines a transformational alternative that is inclusive by design.

Neera co-authored and co-edited Equal access for students with disabilities: The guide for health science and professional education, 2nd edition (Springer Publishing, 2020), and co-authored the AAMC special report, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Action in Medical Education: Lived Experiences of Learners and Physicians with Disabilities (2018). She is a board member for the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science Education. Formerly, she led disability services for health science students at Columbia University and the University of California, San Francisco, and she managed a free legal service run by and for disabled people: Auckland Disability Law. Currently, she is a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Critical Studies in Education, University of Auckland Faculty of Education and Social Work.
