Our Study

The Sleepless Warriors Study recruited US Veterans nation-wide for a research study investigating non-drug treatments for insomnia.

The Sleepless Warriors study has completed recruitment and is no longer enrolling Veterans in the study.

Our aim is to determine which therapy is more helpful for Veterans with a history of concussion or mild traumatic brain injury.

We know that poor sleep can worsen symptoms of concussion such as trouble thinking, pain, fatigue, and mood problems. Poor sleep can also interfere with the rehabilitation process and return to civilian life or active duty.

What is a concussion?

A concussion can occur as a result of trauma to the head from injuries such as:

  • Sports injuries (e.g. football, martial arts)
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls, collisions, or physical assault
  • Military training or combat
  • Blast exposures (e.g. IED, grenade)

These injuries are accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • Feeling dazed/confused - forgetting where you are or being unable to perform tasks/duties as usual).
  • A loss of consciousness - being ‘knocked out’.
  • Loss of memory - not remembering the event or surrounding events.

These symptoms can last seconds, minutes, or hours.

What is insomnia?

Symptoms of insomnia include frequent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep through the night, or waking up too early. This is accompanied by symptoms during the day such as fatigue, trouble with memory/attention, moodiness, headaches and decrease in motivation.
